5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, December 17, 2004
This review is from: Coming Up for Air (Audio CD)
I've known this band since they were known as Mesh and have watched and listened to them grow and mature with their music. Coming Up For Air really shows what this band is capable of. The album opens and goes right for the jugular with the quick paced "Sick Inside" (also the first single). The tune really shows the intensity of singer Scott Gertken's vocals. From there it moves into "Better Side Of Me" and "Smother Me" also two great tracks. Track 4 entitled "Broken" is my personal favorite. Low, crunching guitars and a stomping drum beat make this song one you can bounce to. "Nothing's Ever Fine", a tune about 2 people drifting apart, features nothing but an acoustic guitar and Scott's vocals with the sound of crickets in the background. The album from there moves on to tracks such as "When You Lie" and "Down" which was featured on EA Sports games NHL 2004 and NASCAR Thunder 2004. The two gems of this album though are "Clear Day" and the closing track "Concentrate". Any long time fan of the band knows that "Clear Day" was the song that made them blow up the way they have. The original version was featured on the band's debut EP Ripple Effect (back then they were known as Mesh). On Coming Up For Air, MDZ stripped the song down by slowing the tempo very considerably and adding a piano and slide guitars. A very nice twist to an otherwise phenomonal song. "Concentrate" mellows the listener out for the album's end. Scott sings over a beautiful piano melody. The song really shows off the beauty of his vocals. Great song to totally chill to. This is another great effort by moderndayzero and anyone who loves straight forward rock should pick up this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Day Rock, December 4, 2004
This review is from: Coming Up for Air (Audio CD)
This is a fantastic cd, so much better than all the pop/punk crap that is being played on the radio and mtv right now. Its true modern rock, every song is great(there is no bad song on it). Great vocals, nice guitar work, excellent writing. Definitely worth purchasing! Best tracks are "Rise", "sick inside" "smother me", "broken", and "way out" all the songs are good though and this cd is definitely worth buying!

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Day Zero's "Coming Up For Air" - A Modern Day Classic, February 23, 2006
This review is from: Coming Up for Air (Audio CD)
Fewer things are more impressive in recent memory, than Modern Day Zero's debut record, "Coming Up For Air." This St. Louis band hasn't been around long, but have already made a huge impact.

I discovered MDZ last year at Kansas City Rockfest 2005. They were a second stage band so they weren't really that appealing to me, or so it seemed. But as I found my way into the gates of the concert, "Sick Inside" was playing loud and proud. Nothing catches your attention quite like that song and I was hooked.

After purchasing CUFA, I can honestly call it one of the best CDs to come out in the last 5 years. The opening song "Sick Inside" is exactly the attention-grabber any good album should have, and MDZ follows up well with popular radio-hit "Broken" and many other songs along the same type. The album enters a little slowdown with the short and sweet "Nothing's Ever Fine" and has just as good a second half as it does a first.

Modern Day Zero's "Coming Up For Air" shouldn't be missed by anyone who calls themself a rock music fan. An instant classic, no matter how you slice it.
