Busta's Debut (4.5),
By Nick Mackler (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Coming (Audio CD)
With his funky dreads, raspy growl of a voice, and outrageous videos, Busta Rhymes has always stood out as a very unique rapper at the mainstream level. While he had not yet established a great name for himself prior to this release, "The Coming" produced a wave of excitement from fans who took to his spacey beats, wild lyrical flow and image. "Woo Ha!! Got You All In Check" was his big single off the debut, helping him to build a name for himself as one of the top MC's in the Rap Business.
The Intro is certainly an attention grabber with its explicit content, and it segues fairly well into the opening song "Do My Thing". This song is definitely one of the most unusual on the album, with tons of voiceovers and a sound effect filled beat. "Everything Remains Raw" is a pretty catchy track, with an impressive beat. "Abandon Ship" is another interesting song, with memorable guest appearances by Rampage and The Last Boy Scout, while Busta gives an especially fierce delivery. The ending of this song is a lead-in to the Woo-Ha!! beat, and works effectively. "Woo-Ha!!" is of course a classic with a great chorus and Busta giving insane lyrical deliveries. "It's A Party" adds a flavour of hip-hop to the album, with vocals in the chorus. "Ill Vibe" is probably my favourite song on here, with the great lyrics, and Q-Tip guest starring. The chorus for this track is very catchy. "Flipmode Squad Meets Def Squad" is simply an exceptional collaboration of rappers, with a hardcore beat, producing an 8 minute rap cut. The rapping is very impressive, and Busta closes the song emphatically. "Still Shining" has a nonsense chorus, but pretty good rapping in the verses from Busta. "Keep It Movin'" is the second longest track on here and once again is a great collaboration. It has a gangsta feel to it, with its intensity and lyrical deliveries. "The Finish Line" is a shorter cut, but nevertheless a great song. To conclude, I would recommmend this Busta album to all fans of the rapper, and this album probably exposes Rhymes at his darkest. It worked to produce a great set of rap songs, and now he has changed his style drastically and his latest release is due this July. This album is recommended to all.

If I had as much knowledge of rap music back in '93/'94 as I do now, It wouldn't surprise me if Busta Rhymes was going to end up having a solo career after the Leaders of a New School group was falling apart. His voice and delivery was very unique and creative, as shown on T.I.M.E. and on various ATCQ tracks. Each track here on his debut has a lot of energy and his vocals are in full force, great for any fans, from the lead single "Everything Remains Raw", and all throughout.
Deeper in the album, there are many great tracks here to enjoy. One of his most recognizable singles is "Woo Ha!! Got You All In Check". Busta and his younger cousin, also a member his new group (at the time) Flipmode Squad, Rampage go back and forth on "Abandon Ship" which is surprisingly good. "It's A Party" featuring Zhane has a nice vibe. Q-Tip drops a nice verse along with Busta on "Ill Vibe". My favorite colab track is the eight minute "Flipmode Meets Def Squad" with Jamal, Redman, Keith Murray, Rampage, and Lord Have Mercy. Each verse is straight A game, and the beat is dope too. "Keep It Movin'" is the very last Leaders Of A New School song we'll hear (and I doubt that it was newly recorded). After the good "The Finish Line", Busta closes out the "Outro" with his infamous countdown to the year 2000. Some of the tracks were not favorites of mine like "Hot Fudge", but overall the album is excellent. Busta will follow up with When Disaster Strikes, with much more great singles. The Coming is an easy purchase for many fans who want to remember Busta's old fast and gritty rhyme style. The production and the guests here all match up with Busta. Definitely worth owning. Peace. Lyrics: A- Production: A Guest Appearances: A- Musical Vibes: A- Top 5 Tracks: 1. Everything Remains Raw 2. Def Squad Meets Flipmode Squad (featuring Jamal, Keith Murray, Redman, Lord Have Mercy, and Rampage) 3. Woo Ha!! Got You All in Check 4. It's A Party (featuring Zhane) 5. Abandon Ship (featuring Rampage)

The album is great. It's an entertaining album. Some artist are lyrical but their style of rapping is to mellow, busta, even when he isn't really talking about anything important keeps it interesting. The album even has its funny points. His personality shines thru with some funny skits and certain rhymes that literally make you laugh out loud. Some parts drag on longer than necessary but that's to be expected. It doesn't take away from bustas first LP. I give it 4.5 stars.

Released a couple of years after Leaders Of The New School disbanded, The Coming proves that Busta Rhymes was in fact the most energetic and relevant member of the group. Here we see a more mature, but equally spastic and zany Busta.
From mellow jazzy tracks like "Still Shing" to Busta's signature fast paced bangers like "WooHah", this album is very versatile. Busta rules the entire album with his unqiue flows and complements the production with his rapping like few other rappers can. The only dull track on the album is "It's a Party", which has a very monotonous flow to it and covers some very typical themes. But this is really not even important considering how consistently good the other tracks are.

The debut of Busta Rhymes as a solo artist from Leaders Of The New School with The Coming. Prior to this release, he's no stranger to the game with two albums under his belt. Before platinum status, the jewelry it was about lyrics as this album is a rare on the market. Titles like "Do My Thang" and "Everything Remains Raw" proves that the mentality of this project. "Abandon Ship" featuring cousin, Rampage the Last Boy Scout, as they trade microphone time over the organ laced track. The signature yelling over "Woo Hah!! Got You All In Check" featuring Rampage displays his character and individuality as Busta flows each verse with the same rhyme syllable. The slow bass-driven "Hot Fudge" has him scatting over organs as a bridge is just as the hook says, "...good Lord..." The continuous kick of "Ill Vibe" featuring Q-Tip as they merely conversed as the hook was gook enough being simple as it is. Busta took control of the situation by featuring ex-group Leaders Of The New School on "Keep It Movin'" and got on track for his future with his new crew, Flipmode Squad on "Flipmode Squad Meets Def Squad". This album should have been used as a stepping stone, but as money brainwashed the industry affected Busta as well. This is only a step away from having five stars, but it's a classic for what it is. The Coming!

Busta Rhymes hit the world like a ton of bricks when he made this classic effort The Coming. His wild and crazy rap style keeps you clinging to every word plus the skits on here are pretty funny. The all the guest appearances shine on here except for Keith Murray and the production was fire. Songs like DO MY THING, EVERYTHING REMAINS RAW, ABANDON SHIP(Rampage sounds pretty good on here), ITS A PARTY WOO HAH!! GOT YOU ALL IN CHECK, ILL VIBE(yo yo word), FLIPMODE SQUAD MEETS DEF SQUAD(everybody's verse was fire except Keith Murray's), STILL SHINING show that Busta Rhymes was great just the wasy he was. Bottom Line: Busta Rhymes' The Coming is a hip hop classic in its own right. This Cd is for everybody who wants to remember him for who he was back then and not who he is now.
