Book Description

Harlequin Super Romance January 1, 2005

A house filled to the rafters with love. That was all Cleo Channing ever wanted. And when Malcolm Channing walked into her life and swept her off her feet, she soon had it all—the house, an adoring husband, three beautiful children.

But their firstborn was a troubled girl, who brought the family unimaginable pain. Finally there was nothing left for Cleo and Malcolm to do but dismantle the house built on love…and for them all to go their separate ways.

Now their daughter has returned, forcing Cleo's and Malcolm's worlds to intersect once again. Making them wonder if their family—and their love—ever truly died.

Maybe sorting through the ashes of the past can usher in a new era of hope. Except, the treacherous issues that once drove them apart still remain….

More About the Author

USAToday and Kindle bestselling author of 30+ novels in romance and women's fiction, a three-time RITA finalist and Romantic Times BOOKReviews Career Achievement Award winner, Jean Brashear knows a lot about taking crazy chances. A lifelong avid reader, at the age of forty-five with no experience and no training, she decided to see if she could write a book. It was a wild leap that turned her whole life upside down, but she would tell you that though she's never been more terrified, she's never felt more exhilarated or more alive. She's an ardent proponent of not putting off your dreams until that elusive 'someday'--take that leap now.

What They're Saying about The Goddess of Fried Okra:

"THE GODDESS OF FRIED OKRA is a poignant journey of one woman's search for a place to belong. The characters are as delightful and engaging as can be found between the pages of a book, and the book itself is a road map to happiness - something for which everybody yearns." ~New York Times bestselling author Sharon Sala

"A wonderfully engaging story of one woman's search for self. Jean Brashear tugs on your heartstrings and won't let go." ~New York Times bestselling author Julia London

"THE GODDESS OF FRIED OKRA is a fabulous read. Riveting. Original. Those characters grabbed my imagination and didn't let go." ~New York Times bestselling author Cathy Maxwell

4.0 out of 5 stars Family in crisis; love revived, May 2, 2005
This review is from: Coming Home: Mother & Child Reunion (Harlequin Superromance No. 1251) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is the first in Brashear's trilogy recounting the same events (basically) from three different points of view. The plot concerns the pain and recovery of a family which has fallen apart after a daughter's decision to drive drunk costs the life of her adored younger brother. When this oldest daughter shows back up years later, teetering on the razor-edge of starvation and despair, with a child of her own in tow, chaos erupts and old wounds are reopened.

Specifically, this book focuses on Cleo and Malcolm Channing, the parents who deal with their prodigal daughter's return, and the growing awareness that, despite divorce and tremendous anger and pain, their own love has never completely died.

This book is not by any means a light read, but it is realistic and powerful--and worth your time. Especially memorable is the fact that the lead couple are grandparents!
