The Coming of the Saucers ... UFO's from Sixty-Four Years Past, July 22, 2011
This review is from: The Coming of the Saucers (Paperback)
The Coming of the Saucers was originally published in 1952 by aviator Kenneth Arnold and publisher Raymond Palmer, and is for all intends and purposes probably the very first book ever to take a serious look at the Unidentified Flying Object phenomenon. Numbering a total of 192 pages, of which thirty-two of those are given over to lavish monochrome photographs from the era in which it was published; the first eighty-four pages of the volume are given over to an eye-witness commentary of his own experiences by none other than Kenneth Arnold with occasional notes by Palmer added in post-publishing.
The rest of the book quotes heavily from an official document, known as the PROJECT "SAUCER" report published April 27th, 1949 by the United States military in order to diffuse public concern over Flying Saucer sightings. This could be called a 'specialist publication' as it deals with sightings and incidents best understood by those who take the time to study the UFO phenomenon. However, that said, it is also an excellent read for those just beginning to study the subject and provides many excellent references in regards to cases dating back more than sixty years to what is now thought of as the "classic age" of the Flying Saucer before it became the silly season in the mid-fifties and the rise of Contactee cults.
I happen to own an original first edition of the original 1952 edition and the current publication accurately replicates both the scale, layout and content of that volume, albeit with an updated front cover and commentary on the rear and despite a comment on the back cover which suggests that it was originally issued with an audio recording of Arnold's original statements, no such recording was dispatched with the volume I received. However, that said, you would be very hard-pressed to find another volume from this era that does the subject of Kenneth Arnold's first sighting, the infamous Tacoma Affair or Arnold's second sighting justice. My advice - BUY THIS, you certainly won't regret it.
