Review
"Our best photographers, from Mathew Brady to Russell Lee, have been social historians who happened to be good with a camera. Wendy Watriss and Fred Baldwin are in this intellectual tradition. Looking at their remarkable pictures of the Texas Hill Country, one is struck by their grasp of place, time, feeling--of the impalpable core inside the social integument, which we call culture. This is a fine and deep exploration of the Texas Germans, given added depth by Lawrence Goodwyn''s essay."--Chandler Davidson
