I heard David Massingill this morning on a radio broadcast of a Members concert on WUMB out of Boston. I had heard David's songs before, one at a time. This was the first time I had heard a group of them together. I was amazed at his humor and his story-telling. He embodies everything that is good about the folk tradition. It is altogether fitting that he hails from Bristol, Tennessee/ Virginia, the birthplace of modern music, both rock and country. It was there, in 1927, that the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and many others were first recorded. This album reflects the best characteristics of that folk tradition. If this album only contained two songs, it would be well worth the price. The first, My Name Joe, which Massingill aptly notes is about friends standing up for friends, which I belive is certainly part of the quintessential bottom line of living. The second, Number One in America, needs no interpretation or comment from me. Perhaps that is the hallmark of a great story/ song. It,indeed, speaks for itself. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. Better yet, buy both of his CD's. You will not be disappointed.

Dave Massengill has a wonderful deep voice and he pronounces his words so well. I love listening to him sing. This particular CD is my favorite.

just returned from seeing david perform at the lunenburg folk festival...ran right out to buy his cd's. made me remember my basic values....great story teller too. wish he'd preform more.

Just came home from hearing you at a venue in Clearwater Florida. Please come South more often. You have grown more confident & comfortable on stage and it was a true blessing to share in this delightful evening of story telling and song. We know Jack Roseman whom I believe was responsible for getting you to Florida on a previous trip, if you and your wife ever want to extend your stay while you are here our house will be open for you to enjoy the beach. My husband is also a folk musician and song writer, and we have been fortunate to meet nice people through his engagements, we would pleased to pass it on if ever the spirit moved you to accept the invitation.Thanks again for a fabulous show.
