5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Challenging
To me, this is one of the best beat em up games of all time, not to mention you can get it for a pretty cheap price. The whole comic book theme is very fun to go through, with different panels and pages. 3.0 out of 5 stars A different take on the platformer genre
It's such an obvious idea, I'm surprised no one has thought of it before: a game that plays like a comic book where you are in the panels and each page is a level. It has neat little features like how enemies are drawn into the page and you can choose different paths, but where the game falls short is in the gameplay. All it consists of is punch-punch-kick again and...

To me, this is one of the best beat em up games of all time, not to mention you can get it for a pretty cheap price. The whole comic book theme is very fun to go through, with different panels and pages. They even have those dialogue bubbles when they talk, and (sometimes) the evil guy draws the enemies you have to defeat. People actually think this game is repetitive-are you kidding me? There are so many different enemies that I never got bored playing it. I haven't played too many of these side-scrolling (more like panel-jumping) punch kick games, but I had a very good time playing this one. If you have a Genesis, just go out and get it. If you don't, get a Genesis for maybe $20-40, because there is an abundance of good title on the Genesis, and get this game along with all of the Sonic the Hedgehog ones. There's only one bad thing about this game, and I don't think this one thing should stop you from getting this awesome game. It is just VERY challenging, and I mean it's challenging. Sometimes it's a fun challenge, other times you'll feel like never playing the game again. This only means the levels take a while to master, and I think they should have made the health gauge a tad bit longer. You only get one health gauge, and it is VERY hard to keep it up most of the time. Other than that, this game is very fun, and you don't have to be willing to sit through it to play it-you only have to be willing to have fun. I think this should have been named a classic, because it's almost as good as Street Fighter 2 (the Genesis version)but maybe it wasn't named a classic because it wasn't too well recognized. Get it, play it, enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this game!!!!, August 24, 2001

This has got to be hands down the best game I have ever played (wait, don't forget Sonic now)it's a very cool game with nice graphics and an engaging storyline (he gets trappped in his own comic book for the love of mike!)and he has to defeat this villan HE made up (like they say, if I can make ya, I can break ya) and he has to go through every panel of the comic and defeat every boss before he can get out which is pretty good because this guy kicks major butt in every single aspect of the word. A great buy and will leave you wanting more and more and more!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT GAME!, July 9, 2001
This review is from: Comix Zone (Video Game)
This game SHOULD be a classic. It was wrote and released rather late in the Genesis' life, and if I recall it's a port from a PC game. (Or is the PC a port from th..oh nevermind.) This is an inneractive comic book alright. For it's time it has a nice story line, and if graphics are your thing they're good too. Fight your way through an evil comic book and escape using kung fu and your electrically-charged rat named Road Kill!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The game that never gets old., September 19, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Comix Zone (Video Game)
This is one of my all-time favorite games. I have cheats for this game that can be found at http://hometown.AOL.com/toptrig12/myhomepage/profile.html
I made this site, and that shows how good this game is. It is a beat-em-up kind of game, with lots of multiple punches and kicks. I've beat it many times, although with my cheat codes. Anyway, I'm just saying this game will never get old. It is about a comic book artist trapped in his own comic book by the evil mutant, Mortus, whom he created! The guy's name is Sketch, and he can kick butt nicely. He also has this pet rat, named Roadkill, who can zap people with his tail. Roadkill can also sniff out hidden items. You will never regret getting this game.

It has neat little features like how enemies are drawn into the page and you can choose different paths, but where the game falls short is in the gameplay. All it consists of is punch-punch-kick again and again; it gets old and doesn't allow for strategy or skill. It also doesn't help that the story and music are weak, not to mention that this game is atrociously difficult.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but very, very tough, November 3, 2011
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Comix Zone (Video Game)
I suppose it's the video-game equivelent of Jet Li then.

Comix Zone is a super-metafictional beat-em-up adventure starring Sketch Turner (and his rodent sidekick Roadkill), a grungy artist who is zapped into his own comic-book and must fight the powerful mutant Mortus (a boss who sort of resembles Colonel Sanders crossed with one of his own chickens). The most innovative thing about the game is that it is set within the panels of the comic-book, with Sketch hopping from one scene to the next. Secrets and power-ups can be revealed by shredding the pages too.

I'll bet my bottom dollar that the concept and execution of this game partially inspired The Matrix. When you think about it, they do have a lot in common. But CZ is undeniably 90s in its production design and style. The game doesn't last for very long but it's very challenging. The most annoying thing about it is the fact that you only get one life for the entire game and when you hit enemies it diminishes your energy bar. Not very fair.

CZ was released right at the tail-end of the Genesis' reign, but it has still become a classic since that time. Personally, I feel that one play-though is enough.
