Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge sets a new standard for expansion packs in both what it adds to the game and how it changes the way you play it. The world is once again on the brink of apocalypse. Yuri, the brilliant and powerful psychic warrior, has rebelled against his former Soviet masters and launched his own scheme to control the world. He's armed with cruel technologies, exotic weapons, and mind-controlling devices that have enslaved entire cities.

In single play, gamers can choose to command the Allies and crush this new threat to freedom, or choose to lead the Soviets and punish this would-be usurper of the Soviet global vision. In multiplayer mode, you'll command Yuri's devastating army using devious weapons based on forbidden technologies: psychic thought, genetics, and cloning. See your brutes flip over tanks with their bare hands, unleash your dominator and control scores of enemy troops, or use a virus to infect opposing forces foolish enough to resist you. With 10 new cooperative missions, gamers have more interesting options than just fighting head-to-head. An improved multiplayer and tournament interface will make it easier than ever to find opponents and allies.

Both the Allied and Soviet armies get new, powerful weapons. The Allies boast a Robot Control Center and Chrono Prison. Amongst the new Soviet weaponry is the Siege Chopper and Boris, a machine-gun-toting commando that can call down laser-guided bombing strikes. The high-quality in-game movies tell the story of Yuri and his insidious plot. The popular characters of Red Alert 2, such as Tanya and Romanov, are back to wage war in cities around the world, including London, Cairo, and San Francisco.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great add-on to an already great game; a must own, October 15, 2001

This review is from: Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge (CD-ROM)
Sometimes, the expansion pack is not all that it is cracked up to be, and many times, designers will put out an expansion pack laced with a few new units just to make you pay for their patch because they got so many things wrong with the original game.

However, this time, the expansion pack could stand on its own. Yuri's Revenge would be a stand-alone if the single player campaigns were longer. Only 7 missions per side, but this isn't all that bad, considering that the missions are much harder now with Yuri's side now being the advisary. Needless to say, expect to replay a few of these missions. Even the veterans will have a little trouble figuring out the best methods to defeat Yuri.

Some of the new additions are nice. The Allies finally have a heavy hitting Tank called the Battlefortress that can garrison 5 units. It can even crush other tanks and walls! Floating robot tanks also are new. The Soviets have a new building that will allow their production costs to decrease while their speed increases. The Spy Plane is also back.

But the main feature of the game is the addition of the new side, Yuri's forces. They are mostly mind-controlling units or such as the like. Be warned: If you get into a shooting match with the Allies or Soviets while playing Yuri, you will lose. The key with Yuri's units is to take full advantage of the mind-control technique. You will even have defensive structures that will mind control units that come close to your base. This makes for an extrememly fortified base, though be warned that not all units can be controled.

Overall, the new units in this game are very nice. The new movie sequences are much better than the original RA2 movies. The opening sequence is especially nicely done. The cheesy sequences are also fewer and far between now. Westwood sure did a nice job with this. Very good touch.

This is a great expansion pack, much like what the Brood War was to Star Craft and The Conquerors was to AOE II. If you have RA2, don't even bother playing this demo first. Go ahead and buy it because it will be the rage very soon in the online strategy gaming front.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yuri's Revenge almost seems pointless..., January 20, 2002
This review is from: Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge (CD-ROM)
Well I am finally back to review the Add On pack for Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge. Yuri's Revenge almost seems pointless because the AI in the game is still the same it seems, all the back to the Original Command and Conquer. The multiplayer aspect of the game is a HUGE PLUS. But let's talk about different aspect of Yuri's Revenge Single Player.

The GAME - The storyline is very odd and weirder now that Red Alert:Yuri's Revenge is messing with Time Travel. Yuri has taken over the world with his Psychic Dominators and now it is up to you (Allies or Soviets) to go back in time and foil his plans. There are two Jurassic Park like scences which really play out funny. Ray Wise has made another appearance in this movie which really goes to show you how well his acting career is doing (LOL). Pretty simple rules apply here, Destroy Yuri and stop his Psychic Dominators. One of the battles will even take you to the Moon to fight Yuri!

The GRAPHICS are what to be expected from a RTS. Not anything really special to look at but your standard 2D explosions and firefights. But I still love how much Command and Conquer has come from the first game and its Pixalated units.

The GAMEPLAY is very nice with many new features and weapons. It is now even easier to get veteran units than before and I don't know what I would do without the ability to Garrison buildings. The Battle Fortress is a very awsome unit next to the Tank Killers and the Soviets still rule with the APOC tanks.

GAMEPLAY BALANCE - Man don't start me on this again because I could go on for hours! I have seen better AI in Quake 2 and even Star Trek Armada. And again you only have to build a certain unit to pretty much destroy the computer. On the Allies side its all about building Prism Tanks. Amass about 20 of these units and you can destroy any base. On the Soviet side all you have to build is about 15 APOC tanks and you can overwhelm any base. Playing around with different stratagies is fun, but sooner or later you are ready to whip the tar out of the computer and complete the mission.

Overall, I found this game to be enjoyable and a worthy add on to Red Alert. With different Units and three different sides to play in Multiplayer it makes to be quite spectacular. Yuri on the other hand was a complete ... His taunting in the game was pretty annoying and it really seems he could not even Mind Control himself a Pizza. But it was still enjoyable. I wonder what new Command and Conquer will come next after Renegade.

5.0 out of 5 stars A few tidbits, August 17, 2001
By
This review is from: Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge (CD-ROM)
Well, I have been fortunate enough to learn a few things about this highly anticipated expansion and just thought that I should say this- It will rock. Yuries Revenge will have all the aspects of Red Alert 2 along with a host of new ones. To start with, there is something that has never before been done on a C&C game- a third faction. In this case, the Yuri faction. Yes, that means you have the Allies, the Soviets, and the evil Yuri fighting againt each other all in one game. Some other great features include new untits for the allies and soviets, including Boris, a new soviet hero who bombs building at long range, the soviet siege chopper, which doesnt get nasty at all untill it lands, an actually big tank for that allies, and new game features including 3 mutiplayer campaigns (yes, I really mean multiplayer campaigns) where you and a buddy fight 3 missions per campaign as each one of the three factions against the other two factions. There is also one multiplayer super-mission in which you fight as the allies and the soviets both teamed up against Yuri. The people at Westwood designed this mission to kill. You probably won't come close to beating it the first 40 times you try. The all-new Yuri faction is not physically strong, but uses its opponents poweres against them. For example, mind control toweres- the first 3 units that dare to enter into it's range are yours. Also one of Yurie's super weapons can be used anywhere on the map like a nuke- only it doesn't destroy the other guys units- it takes controll of them. *Tip-- Spread out your appocolypse tanks if the other guy has one of these* In short its gonna be a great game and well worth the money. You're gonna be impressed the first time you play it. - The Amazing One
