Great add-on to an already great game; a must own,

This review is from: Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge (CD-ROM)
Sometimes, the expansion pack is not all that it is cracked up to be, and many times, designers will put out an expansion pack laced with a few new units just to make you pay for their patch because they got so many things wrong with the original game. However, this time, the expansion pack could stand on its own. Yuri's Revenge would be a stand-alone if the single player campaigns were longer. Only 7 missions per side, but this isn't all that bad, considering that the missions are much harder now with Yuri's side now being the advisary. Needless to say, expect to replay a few of these missions. Even the veterans will have a little trouble figuring out the best methods to defeat Yuri. Some of the new additions are nice. The Allies finally have a heavy hitting Tank called the Battlefortress that can garrison 5 units. It can even crush other tanks and walls! Floating robot tanks also are new. The Soviets have a new building that will allow their production costs to decrease while their speed increases. The Spy Plane is also back. But the main feature of the game is the addition of the new side, Yuri's forces. They are mostly mind-controlling units or such as the like. Be warned: If you get into a shooting match with the Allies or Soviets while playing Yuri, you will lose. The key with Yuri's units is to take full advantage of the mind-control technique. You will even have defensive structures that will mind control units that come close to your base. This makes for an extrememly fortified base, though be warned that not all units can be controled. Overall, the new units in this game are very nice. The new movie sequences are much better than the original RA2 movies. The opening sequence is especially nicely done. The cheesy sequences are also fewer and far between now. Westwood sure did a nice job with this. Very good touch. This is a great expansion pack, much like what the Brood War was to Star Craft and The Conquerors was to AOE II. If you have RA2, don't even bother playing this demo first. Go ahead and buy it because it will be the rage very soon in the online strategy gaming front.

Yuri's Revenge almost seems pointless...,

Well I am finally back to review the Add On pack for Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge. Yuri's Revenge almost seems pointless because the AI in the game is still the same it seems, all the back to the Original Command and Conquer. The multiplayer aspect of the game is a HUGE PLUS. But let's talk about different aspect of Yuri's Revenge Single Player.

This review is from: Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge (CD-ROM)
Well, I have been fortunate enough to learn a few things about this highly anticipated expansion and just thought that I should say this- It will rock. Yuries Revenge will have all the aspects of Red Alert 2 along with a host of new ones. To start with, there is something that has never before been done on a C&C game- a third faction. In this case, the Yuri faction. Yes, that means you have the Allies, the Soviets, and the evil Yuri fighting againt each other all in one game. Some other great features include new untits for the allies and soviets, including Boris, a new soviet hero who bombs building at long range, the soviet siege chopper, which doesnt get nasty at all untill it lands, an actually big tank for that allies, and new game features including 3 mutiplayer campaigns (yes, I really mean multiplayer campaigns) where you and a buddy fight 3 missions per campaign as each one of the three factions against the other two factions. There is also one multiplayer super-mission in which you fight as the allies and the soviets both teamed up against Yuri. The people at Westwood designed this mission to kill. You probably won't come close to beating it the first 40 times you try. The all-new Yuri faction is not physically strong, but uses its opponents poweres against them. For example, mind control toweres- the first 3 units that dare to enter into it's range are yours. Also one of Yurie's super weapons can be used anywhere on the map like a nuke- only it doesn't destroy the other guys units- it takes controll of them. *Tip-- Spread out your appocolypse tanks if the other guy has one of these* In short its gonna be a great game and well worth the money. You're gonna be impressed the first time you play it. - The Amazing One

This review is from: Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge (CD-ROM)
I recieved my copy several days ago, and let me tell you now: this game will NOT disappoint. With the exception of AOE2: The Conquerers, this is the best expansion pack for any PC game to come out in recent memory. Even with the addition of a third playable faction (the Yuri side), the game remains very well balanced--second only to Starcraft. Graphics and sound are much like RA2's: they get the job done well, but don't expect to be knocked out of your seat by them. The cutscenes and the storyline of this game (and RA2) are not designed for realism or drama. They're simply fun. A wonder so many people simply don't understand. The addition of a Yuri side adds to the hectic pace of RA2, true. For many people, that's a great improvement over the other RTS games on the market. If you didn't like the pace of RA2, you're probably not going to enjoy this expansion pack. If you liked RA2 at all, you should buy this now. Stop reading reviews. Press the One-Click button if its enabled. You'll thank me.

Unlike some of the other reviewers who are speculating on the quality of this expansion I am speaking from experience. I just purchased it and can't over emphasize how much it improves RA2.Yuri's Revenge brings a whole new faction to the Red Alert universe. Yuri's army is very well balanced with the other two warring sides boasting a plethora of mind control and disruption tactics. Don't worry about the original sides, the Allies have a new battle fortress and robot tanks and the Soviets have siege choppers and a commando named Boris to deal with him. Unfortunately his army is not selectable in the single player campaigns, which contains 7 new missions each for both the Soviets and Allied forces. But who cares, the multiplayer is where it is at and Yuris side is definately capable. Speaking of multiplayer there is a 10 mission cooperative campaign playable online (I haven't played this portion of the game yet though). If you don't play online (cmon give it a try losing is a way to learn to play) then owning Yuri's Revenge is not a necessity. But if you do or are thinking about it then get this now.

Well let me tell you this.. The Imformation provided by the guy above is wrong.. The game was great I love it.. If you have played Red Alert 2 you would understand the game much better thats probably the best reason why that customer didn't like the game.. And Tiberian sun.. in my Opinion gets old after 8 months.. Red Alert 2 I have been playing since it first came out.. Its alot funner playing online with people you know it provides a more stratgey.. But I have purchesed Yuri's Revenge and I'am Enjoying it more then the first one, its rather challenging trying to keep your units from being taken over by the mind control of yuri.. Well I hope my Imformation is useful...

This game is a must have!,

This review is from: Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge (CD-ROM)
This is my favorite game. This game is the expansion to Red Alert 2. In this game Yuri comes back to try and take over the world using is mind controll technology. This game has many new features!New Allied Units and Buildings New Soviet Units and Buildings What sets this game apart from many games is it is based on a more realistic time. Some of the units, however, are not so realistic. In the game you get "heroes" on each side. For the Allies you get a modern day Annie Oakly, whose is not afraid to get down and dirty. For the Soviets you get Boris. A very powerful unit capable of calling in an airstrike on enemy buildings. For Yuri you get none other than Yuri Prime. Yuri Prime is the one and only Yuri, capable of controlling enemy units and buildings. The game, of course, has a couple of flaws. Pros Cons 3. The Magnetron is also pointles in the game. It creates a magnatic pull that can do barelly any damage to buildings and pulls any units to your Magnetron. If your Magnetron is defending your base, what good does it do if it pulls the unit towards your base? Other than that I thought the game was a fun game. If you think that you are going to get any educational value out of this you are wrong! It is a game meant to make you think like a general, attack very cleaverly, and learn not to think that a defense is pointless. If you own this game or are intrested in buying it, I recommend any of the Red Alert series. ...

Yuri's Revenge is a great sequel!!,

This review is from: Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge (CD-ROM)
A great game counterpart to Red Alert 2. This takes off right after ra2, having the inferior seeming Allied forces win the war. (Sigh.) However, Yuri has defected from the Soviet Union, building his own excellent army to play in skirmish or internet. You can command all armies in the most fun gameplay of them all, skirmish. New units have been acquired by the Allies and Soviets, to fight Yuri's diabolical army. Anyway, Soviets are making a comeback with all their units, with several marvelous brand new ones. The cool Siege Chopper has a machine gun to dispatch allies or yuris infantry forces, and an artillery cannon, (oh yeah!) to shoot the crap out of the allied structures and massacre their infantry, even the anti air guardian GIs will go down right away to these big guns. Attacking a Yuri base with these requires more caution, as mind controlling units and buildings can wreck a small force. Just place them away from Psychic Towers and fire away! The Soviet hero unit, Boris, is better than Tanya, as his range and ease of use is greater. Place a laser designator on any building, and some MIGs will demolish the structure with their missiles. The Industrial Plant reduces the build time of their powerful vehicle force. Yuri's army is quite fun to command, as his units are destructive and great to use. His miners are pretty good, but the slaves are extremely low on health, so guard them carefully. His Iniatiates are the best basic infantry, and are very dangerous when garrisoned in buildings. His Yuri Clones and Prime can fry infantry, (civilians) and control them. Primes can take over most of the armies buildings. The Virus sniper kills infantry with a toxic residue. His brutes are hulks that can crush tanks and infantry that stand in his path. His vehicles include one similar to the Grizzly and Rhino, the Lasher, and a Gatling Tank that has spinning barrels that can tear apart army men. Another addition to his mind control technology is the mastermind, a vehicle able to control 3 units at a time. (ONLY THREE PER DEVICE!!) Magnetrons can fry buildings and drag vehicles in the air with a magnetic beam, which won't effect infantry. His structures and Naval Yard are neary identical to the three armies ones, except the Psychic Tower can mind control units, and Gatling Cannons are emplaced anti infantry guns. Yuri's Naval Yard produces Boomer missile launchers like Dreadnaughts, and torpedoes like Attack Subs. His superweapons are the Genetic Mutator and the Dominator. Mutators turn any infantry into Brutes, while the Dominator controls and destroys everything in a wide radius. The allies are still here, and have mind control immune vehicles, (don't be TOO afraid of them) which are Robot Tanks with weak armor, and the massive Battle Fortress. 5 or so deployed grouped up Siege Choppers and some Lasher Tanks are enough to destroy a single Fortress, and a Yuri Clone can take one over with his mind. The way to build Robot Tanks for allies is to build a Robot Control Centre.Yuri's Revenge has some gameplay changes. Team Alliance has maps designed for close battle with teams. There are some neutral units on some maps. Civilians can carry very weak pistols, and automobiles are good to mind control and scout with. If you read this review, just play this COOL GAME!!

Yuri's Revenge,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge (CD-ROM)
Yuri's Revenge is by far worth the money. Allied and Soviet get new and improved weapons and then there is the third side which is Yuri. The Soviets get Boris, The new Soviet hero. He can elimintate men and tanks in seconds with his machine gun . And to destroy buildings, he can call in an airstrike of MIGs that easily take out the building. For the Allies, the SEAL is now a standerd unit. The Allies also get the Robot Control Center, which lets you build Robot tanks. They hover and are immune to mind- control. They also get the Battle Fortress which is a huge tank that is a moving garrison. Any infantry except rocketeers can be put inside and can shot out at enemys. The Battle Fortress can also crush walls. All in All, Yuri's Revenge is one of the best games around.

Westwood doesn't disappoint!,
By
This review is from: Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge (CD-ROM)
Westwood games do not skimp on the portions! This expansion set adds an ENTIRELY NEW third army to the game to go up against the Allied and Soviet sides, who also have a few new units. The new "Yuri" army is not as tough, and must rely on psychic mind-control power to defeat the brute force of its opponents. An excellent concept, and very well-implemented. Good balance. There are a few new, challenging campaign missions to keep the single player occupied briefly, but you really want to get this if you're a multiplayer. There are excellent enhancements to multiplayer gaming, such as the ability to form alliances and choose starting locations before the game begins so that you don't wind up on the other side of the map from your ally. Great ideas. Kudos to Westwood! |
