1.0 out of 5 stars It doesn't work October 2, 2012
Verified Purchase
Been waiting for a long time for a Windows 7 compatible version of the game, paid $50, and Red Alert 2 doesn't work. At all. The start menu doesn't work. The intro movie doesn't load. You can't play the game. A total failure on the part of EA.

Just make a game that works. This is terrible, and someone should be fired. Do not buy this edition of the game.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointed October 2, 2012

Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
Initial Review - 1/10/2012
I bought the Ultimate edition because I enjoyed the original and thought the new release would work on current OS and hardware. The CD does not contain any games, just a key and a music CD...first disappointment. You have to load the Origin client (account required), use the key in the CD case to enable game downloads and then wait and wait and wait.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE A HIGH SPEED CONNECTION DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS GAME, the original C&C (with covert ops) is a 1.5 gb download.

Once you get it downloaded, you have to use the Origin client to launch the game (so they can track your game play and validate use rights). After the nostalgic introduction sequence the game starts and more disappointment sets in. The game scroll function based upon the sides of the screen makes play miserable. Adjusting the in-game scroll setting makes no difference, setting the mouse to slow movement and disabling acceleration no help. Disappointment is becoming irritation. The publisher couldn't bother to test this game on Win7 with modest hardware, this is just stupid, lazy and greedy. I didn't expect redone graphics that would fit in a 24" wide screen, but I did expect basic game play to work properly. Disappointed for sure.

Not sure what comes next, return the game, open a support call...ugh. Pretty close to saying DON'T BUY THIS GAME

1.0 out of 5 stars 90% Digital only and requires Origin, no thanks October 20, 2012

Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
When I first heard about the "Ultimate C&C Collection" I couldn't wait. I had pipe dreams of having all the C&C games updated to work on newer systems with Windows 7. Saddly, it turns out all the games are digital downloads (even if you buy the retail box) via EA's Origin service, a service that is a mear shadow vs Steam.

Do youself a favor, find C&C the First Decade and then complete your collection by finding the remaining games retail discs. Then do some searching at the fan websites and learn how to get the games up and running on newer systems with some tweaking. Not only will you get physical copies, but you'll also be able to avoid the horrible Origin service and EA's DRM (most of it anyway).

I'll hold off and cross my fingers that EA will release the C&C games for gog.com to use... until then, PLEASE DON'T BUY THIS COLLECTION. EA has to learn that it isn't acceptable for them to retail box digital downloads and then force their download service down our throats.

1.0 out of 5 stars They lied again - do not buy October 17, 2012

Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
Firstly, this is obviously about this package - the games themselves are classics (thank you Westwood Studios).

EA lied when they said these are for windows 7 - they aren't. I bought this in hope that the old games would work, because there were serious graphics problems with them when run on newer systems, and I bought this on the explicit assumption that they would be fixed - after all, EA stated they were for windows 7. However, lo and behold, the problems are identical to the problems in previous releases, meaning that they didn't change a thing. Not only that, even supposing I felt like playing a game with distorted graphics, some of the missions in Red Alert simply freeze, making it impossible to play.

Secondly, there is no disk - you have to download something called "Origin", a launcher whence the games are downloaded and played which also allows EA to spy on you. Considering I ordered this to my house specifically so that I could have a hard copy and NOT have to download anything, I am appalled - not only at EA, but also at Amazon, which states specifically in its product description that this is a DVD-ROM.

I am getting a refund. I was cheated when I bought The First Decade but I didn't bother; not this time EA. I'm disgusted that they can't be bothered to fix known problems with their games. I want hard copies and I don't want their spyware on my computer. I'm a paying customer (and have been for over 20 years) and I'm being treated like a potential thief.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bit dissapointed October 5, 2012

Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
Yeah... No games actually with this product. Basically I per-ordered a cd with game music on it. When I originally per-ordered, it said nothing that this was just a case with a code to go to Origin. You have to download everything, which is what I was trying to avoid, which is why I bought physically and not through Origin, but to no avail. Sucks for me since I have a slow DSL connection.

At the time, I don't remember seeing this graphic that has the cover with the yellow corner that says digital download, I am not blind.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't run at all in Windows 7 64 bit October 6, 2012
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I was looking forward to purchasing this since I've been playing C&C since day one. BUT in the small print it states this edition will NOT run on Windows 7 64 bit OS. I will bet there are a lot of people running Windows 7 64 bit and not 32 bit.

Sorry! You are not getting my money. Why do they keep screwing up a fantastic Command and Conquer gaming empire? Command and Conquer 5 was terrible. Will someone please get back to the C&C that worked.

4.0 out of 5 stars C&C: The Ultimate Collection
I have not yet installed any of the games. I just upgraded my main computers OS to WIN7 Professional. Yet I do like C&C quite a bit from having previously played it.
