Amazon.com Review

With new units, new artwork, new video cut scenes, and a new multiplayer game mode, Firestorm is a solid add-on that will certainly appeal to fans of Tiberian Sun. Like every game in the Command & Conquer series, Firestorm lets you play as either the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) or the Brotherhood of NOD. Each side gets nine new missions to undertake, with both sides struggling to tie up loose ends left over from the Tiberian Sun game. While there aren't very many new missions in this expansion pack, fans of the series will appreciate Firestorm's solid mission design and variety of new units.

GDI players get to build and command mobile EMP cannons, long-range Juggernaut artillery units, and the mighty mobile war factory, which allows you to build military units at just about any location on the battlefield. NOD players get a mobile stealth generator, a diabolical cyborg unit called the Reaper, and their own version of the mobile war factory, dubbed The Fist of NOD. In addition, many of the original Tiberian Sun units have been upgraded or enhanced in Firestorm.

Another cool feature is the new World Domination multiplayer mode. In World Domination, literally thousands of players can take part in a tournament between GDI and NOD, as each side tries to take over the entire world. With the world map divided up into many small regions, players attempt to help their side by winning one region at a time. Once one side has control of the entire globe, the game resets.

Despite the hype surrounding its development and release, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun did little to revolutionize the real-time strategy genre. It did, however, provide more of the classic RTS game play that made the original Command & Conquer and its Red Alert prequel so popular. The same holds true for Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun: Firestorm. --Michael E. Ryan

Pros:

  • More real-time strategy in the C&C universe
  • New units for both GDI and NOD forces
  • Great new multiplayer mode: World Domination
Cons:
  • Only nine new missions per side
  • More real-time strategy in the C&C universe

4.0 out of 5 stars It's an Improvment, April 27, 2000
This review is from: Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun Expansion Pack: Firestorm (CD-ROM)
When I bought Firestorm I was expecting a normal expansion pack - few new units, maps etc. But once I started playing I realized that there was much more to it than that.

The biggest improvment over Tiberian Sun is story. The story is much more interesting and although the in game movies suck it dosen't matter because most of the plot twists are in-game anyways. Special units have been created just for one part in the story, such as a huge robot, which is a nice touch.

Although the music is being sold as faster paced and more like Red Alert it's pretty much more of the same. Graphics also don't change too much.

The new units are pretty cool but the Reaper is the only one that I really liked, unfortunatly you can only use it in Multiplayer. The new Juggernaut artilery unit is alright but it can't really aim that well and the Nod Art. unit is still superior in my mind.

All in all Firestorm makes Tiberian Sun a much better game and if you already have TS then by all means buy Firestorm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best add on to hit the gaming industry., April 3, 2000

This review is from: Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun Expansion Pack: Firestorm (CD-ROM)
Okay, I have only 1,000 words, but I want to write as an extensive review as possible. It's very rare that you see an extensive review on sites like this. In my personal opinion, Firestorm manages to parallel or go beyond any add on for ANY game that has yet hit the gaming industry. With new missions, TONS of new and balancing units, and an excellent plot, Firestorm sets the standards. It's going to be difficult to capture the full spectrum of this product in 1,000 words, but here we go. To start off, we'll go for GDI units. First we have the Juggernaut: a very titan-like vehicle with three laser cannons and a very long range. Designed to give GDI an "artillery" match while it rocks at supporting other ground units. Next there's drop pods: great if combined with Ion blasts or massive air assaults. These egg shaped pods strafe the ground below them with machine gun fire as they fall, then release a storm of men to wreak havoc on an enemy base. The Mobile EMP: just like its "big brother." Now quickly for Nod. First, the Cyborg Reaper: cheap to build, it shoots missiles for air and land while immobilizing only infantry units with nets. (Three legs, what an idea.) The Mobile stealth generator: again, just like its "big brother." Thats your quick overview of the units. Both sides recieve limpit drones, robots that burrow under the ground, then leap out and attach themselves to any unit that drives or hovers over it. From then on, it sees what that unit sees. Well, I don't want to hold over this review any longer. I'd just like to say again that, with its cut scenes, new music, new missions, new Cabbol and Eve voices, and ESPECIALLY new units, this expansion will be a classical masterpiece for years to come. Don't wait a second, I recommend this game for any fans of the RTS game genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Expansion to a great game, March 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun Expansion Pack: Firestorm (CD-ROM)
As soon as you get over the fact that the graphics haven't changed much you love this game. The story line is great, the new units are fun and creative and allow for great tactical missions. The one major flaw of the original TS was the mission balance....they have balanced out the missions emensley; none are to hard, yet none are to easy. A must buy for any Tiberian Sun owner.
