The Mariners were the first racially integrated group to achieve any prominence in America, and became stars of the Arthur Godfrey show. Considered by many to be one of the best vocal quartets of their era. IN COMMAND is an exceptional reminder of the days when skilled quartets were well received. Available here are all their Columbia singles along with two full length albums including the hit records "See The Moon", "They Call The Wind Maria" and "Sometime".

I remember the Mariners from their regular appearance on the Arthur Godfrey show (1949-1955), and always enjoyed their sprit and harmony, so hoped eventually their music would become available on CD. Here it is! A two CD set. The first one contains their most popular songs including all those ranked on the pop charts in the top 20, including Sometime (#16 in 1950), They Called the Wind Maria (#30 in 1951), and I See The Moon (#14 in 1953). The last two were the ones I remembered and wanted most. The second CD includes a variety of genre, including quite a few well known religious songs that I wasn't aware they had recorded. My impression is that the high quality of their harmony is best displayed on some in the latter category. This is a fine CD set that I gladly recommend for those seeking quality harmony from that era, and/or songs by the Mariners.

I grew up listening to the Mariners' Christmas music. It is exquisite, and it's all included on this CD set. Their Christmas songs include traditional carols not much heard today, such as "Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head" and "I Wash My Face In a Golden Vase." The Mariners are beautiful singers both in harmony and as soloists.

This is music for all generations. Last year I played the Christmas carols for my nieces and nephews, ages twelve to twenty-six, and they were enchanted. In fact, they asked for their own copy!
