4.0 out of 5 stars well executed tactical strategy game, April 8, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Commanders: Attack [Online Game Code] (Software Download)
This is a solid tactical strategy game. If you've played Advanced Wars on the Nintendo DS, or Final Fantasy Tactics, or X-Com, or any of a host of other games, you'll be familiar with this type of strategy game. Elements common to the genre include:
* turn-based combat
* units move then shoot (usually)
* terrain affects movement, defense, and vision
* units have different movement, vision, and other capabilities
* units are effective against some types of units and not others
* units can gain experience and become more powerful
* fog-of-war
* etc.

Though there are a lot of games like this on other platforms, there aren't many on the Xbox 360. Regardless, I never seem to tire of the formula. Commanders: Attack of the Genos executes on the formula very well. It does a particularly good job at adding visual flourishes -- I love the explosions, and I love the fact that you can pan and zoom at will. The commander units are also very well done. Each commander has a pair of unique powers that no other unit or commander has. For example, one commander heals nearby units, another gives a defense boost to nearby units, and yet another boosts the attack power of nearby air units, etc. etc..

The only reason I didn't give the game five stars is that the it lacks some of the depth and replayability of similar games. For example, there are only a handful of maps, the campaign is linear, and there are no unlockable units that you can gain access to after many victories. I was also disappointed that the normal and advanced campaigns were virtually identical. (Was there 1 extra enemy unit per map?? If there were any differences between normal and advanced, they were small enough that I couldn't detect them.)

A solid, fun title, and perfectly executed, but I wanted to see more. Definitely worth the price, though.
