4.0 out of 5 stars Ten years later, October 28, 2001
This review is from: Commando Remixes (Audio CD)
Vanessa Paradis has never been high on remixes. Very few of her songs have actually had remixes, and most of her B-sides are either new tracks or live recordings. Which is why this edition of 'Commando' is particularly interesting.

This is Vanessa's first CD single in over ten years. During that time, she has acted in movies, gotten engaged to Johnny Depp, and had a baby, but yet she comes back with material so superior to her earlier work, that its hard to tell if she had ever left the music scene for good.

However, I'm not sure if the work on this CD is going to get her any new fans. While 'Bliss' is an amazing work of art, this first single wasn't as big a hit as one would imagine. However, Paradis' team somehow thought it wise to record four remixes of the track and release them together. This is a typical American response to Cd-Single releases, and I wish they hadn't done it. Though considering that this is the maxi CD of the single, and that the regular version just has the original track plus the same old rendition of 'St Germain' on it, it probably isn't a totally horrid idea.

Onto the remixes themselves. While they aren't groundbreaking, they are listenable, and Madonna/All Saints fans will be pleased with the William Orbit-esque feel to them. I must say though, that I can't really recommend this to anyone who is NOT a huge Vanessa fan, as this is pretty banal fare, really. However, if you are a collector, do obtain this. What I am personally looking for these days is the test-pressing CD of the second single 'Pourtant', which is almost impossible to get.

I love Vanessa, she doesn't have the greatest voice in the world, but in this case she works with what she has. Good song too.
