Difficult Game,
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars

You can choose the level of game difficulty, but the easy level is super hard and getting past the first stage is next to impossible. There are plenty of weapons to choose from, but there are so many people shooting at you that you will lose your life rather quickly. There is no resume feature, therefore you will have to start from the very beginning when you lose a life. This game is not recommended for casual stress free playing as it will frustrate you to no end.

This was the first ds game i paid money for. It was only 15 dollars new. I think the reason for this is that the game has design flaws. I got a little bit farther than previously today, (before my ds ran out of batteries), but i still havent beaten the first level! I'm sure i will eventually make progress in this game, but it doesnt make sense for the game to begin with so much difficulty. This early difficulty does not come in the form of interesting challenges, it is just the same enemies charging you over and over. The hills that you have to walk over do not make sense, and do not even seem to be consistent from one to the next. It looks like you have to jump on one spot, but then that spot is just an image of a platform, while the spot that you do need to jump on does not look like a platform at all. Try figuring that out while three aliens are throwing grenades at you. Is this fun to you?
I wish i had just spent $30 on metal slug 7 instead.

Awesome, obscure Metal Slug clone for fans of that series and of course Contra. Try it, you won't be disappointed!

I will preface by stating that I absolutely love the run-and-gun genre with the Metal Slug and Contra series being some of my favorites of all time. There aren't too many derivative shooters that come around so it's always welcome to see another entry into the genre to go along with Demon Front, Dolphin Blue, Gunforce II, and the few others. However, this is definitely a sub-par effort with serious flaws that hamper enjoyment and playability.
Commando is a Metal Slug clone, which should be a good thing, but one that fails to deliver the basic premise of fun. The controls are precise, the music is entertaining despite being repetitive, and the weapon selection is varied to allow for unabashed destruction. However, the game is incredibly difficult in a cheap, rather than challenging, manner and devoid of fun to the point of frustration. You have but a single life to traverse incredibly prolonged levels with no checkpoints. Repetivive enemies take away far too much damage and are at times placed in areas where there is seemingly no way to escape unscathed. There is no point scoring or other challenge system implemented, akin to Cave manic shmups, that would justify the incredible difficulty. The level backgrounds have adequate variety, but the same enemies and boring sets lead to visual ennui and frustration at hearing the same death scream over and over again. Even if you love RNG games you will be sorely disappointed by this clone. Any of the above mentioned games in the beginning will be a far more enjoyable gaming experience. Even if you must have something on the go, choose Metal Slug 7 as a vastly superior gaming-wise and fun to play entry into the RNG foray. Steel Disaster is not a complete bottom of the barrel Imagine game, but it is sure to leave your fingers cramped, your brain numb from repetition, and your heart angry at the waste of time endured when you could have been playing far better action games.
