Commandos, December 1, 2000
This review is from: Commandos Ammo Pack (CD-ROM)
This is one of the best PC games i've played in a long time. It has everything thing you want in a strategy game, challange, realism, action, blood, and of coarse a huge heap of strategy. If you are stuped for the next PC game to buy I strongly sugest you give this one a go. With 6 commandos and 24 missions I think you can't ease throgh this game. So if you want real WW2 action with actually being there, this is the one for YOU!!!

I missed out on Commandos when it first came out, but a recent download of the demo was enough to convince me to buy the Ammo Pack. Good decision! This is not only the most fun I've had playing a computer game in a long time, but the value of this set is incredible. Something like 28 HUGE missions [and its cheap too]? Sold.
I imagine this game would be great for someone who likes real-time strategy, but it can also be enjoyed by those who don't (like me). WWII buffs will find a lot to love here, too. It may not have 100% historical accuracy, but it manages to capture the feel of the era nicely. Also, the mission briefings make mention of historical events and should prove educational to those less knowledgeable about the war. There could be worse things than a fun game inspiring one to learn more about history!
If there's one little nitpick, it's with the voices used for Beyond the Call. They are changed from Behind Enemy Lines, and they are VERY annoying. The driver is particularly bad; he sounds like a nerdy little kid who would probably wear a propeller beanie. In the original, he sounded like the stereotypical cocky Yank you'd expect to see in a war movie. Then, there's the diver. In the original, his voice was just dripping with sarcasm and contempt. "Certainly . . . sir." In the add-on, the lines are the same, but the pause before "sir" is gone and so is the emotion behind the delivery. Also, the spy's cries for mercy when being shot will almost compel you to leave him to his fate!
Fortunately, the added abilities in BTC more than make up for any inadequacies in the voice work. Now, every character can distract the enemy, even if only on a temporary basis. Also, more of your men have silent weapons. But, the ability to capture and control an enemy soldier adds the greatest new dimension to the gameplay. When find yourself in a situation where you are using three "puppet" soldiers to distract three dangerous enemies, you'll almost feel sorry for the poor suckers you are about to defeat. Almost.
Finally, for those having trouble with Beyond the Call of Duty asking for the CD even when the CD is in, go to the Commandos page at the Eidos website. They have a patched file that will solve the problem for you.

WW2 on your computer screen, January 2, 2002
This review is from: Commandos Ammo Pack (CD-ROM)
This game is FUN!! If you plan to buy Commandos 2, you should play these games first. They are both good with a lot of realism and a very high level of difficulty. With a few shots, all of your men are dead, just to give an example of this difficulty and realism.
The tutorials on each caracter show you the specs of each man. If you've never played the demo, you should use these.
The game isn't too expensive and together you have more than 30 misssions to spend hours of fun on, so I would say: BUY IT!!
