5.0 out of 5 stars Great WWII Game
Finally, Edios brings greatness back to the Commandos label - it is too bad they waited so long because most people didn't give this game a try. Finally, Edios brings greatness back to the Commandos label - it is too bad they waited so long because most people didn't give this game a try. Not the very best WWII first person shooter (Call of Duty) but very good and different in important ways. First, it is not (mostly) about running through the fray and killing, it is about stealth and guile. You get to see a first person shooter from an angle not widely explored, literaly behind enemy lines (as the spy). Watch German soldiers doing PT, getting drunk, dressed down, and visiting with local females (french). Although Amazon lists it as an E rating, it is actually rated T, and probalby should be rated M. Cussing, bloddy violence and sexual themes are common and add to the "real" feel of the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS AN EIDOS GAME!!!!, August 3, 2007

Wow! What a fantastic game on virtually every level. I wish it would never end! And from Eidos no less, the company that hires a 2 buck an hour guy to design the controls on their other games like Lara Croft and Hitman; two glorious jewel games destroyed by one ahole! This time, Eidos put it all together, a great game with fps lunacy, stealth and thought which is required to beat this game along with great simple controls to boot. Congrats Eidos on finally a brilliant job well done! Keep the new control guy employed and send the ahole packing!

3.0 out of 5 stars First person with strategy, but not the best strategy employed..., June 19, 2010

WWII; what male on God's made earth does not like games pertaining to this time era?? classic stuff, like Medal of Honor and Battlefield 1942 is what this game is a blend of: a run and gun shooter with different classes to take out your objectives. Though Battlefield 1942 was by far way better (except for on story), it still has a Medal of Honor feel where everyone is still running and gunning, making the momentum of the game all the better. only problem is that most of the time its hard to realize what exactly your allowed to do. for example, I walked passed three guys undetected that were only 20 feet away just because I was crouched, and they were in a circle, barely talking. Grant it, it blends quite a good action field, where your allowed to switch between 3 heroes instantaneously, and fight from all three of their fronts. So you have your sniper, your run 'n gun, and spy. What I don't like is how much art work they did to close up the screen, and to hide how small the world is, which is why I love battlefield a whole lot more.

Okay looking graphics, seems like entire look is PS2 or Xbox, but the faces look really detailed for some reason, at least on the french men.

Story, though I haven't hopped through it all, is already starting to look interesting, but when its just about three guys who blow, shoot and assassinate things and people together, what could be possibly that special.

I also hated having so much HUD on and around my face: it was really annoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding PC Game!!, July 12, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Commandos Strike Force (CD-ROM)
Awesome!!! I think that one word sums up this entire game. I must congratulate Edios on making a WWII PC game which breaks the typical WWII FPS drawl.

The element of surprise and stealth in this game is amazing! The AI for the enemy in this game is quite suburb. Every single mission kept you engaged and enthralled.

The use of three different commandos, each with their own special abilities adds a whole new level of fun to the game. Each mission is also very well laid out and entertaining.

I found the graphics in this game to be quite good, at least they are not some 90's 3D FPS graphics. I cannot stress how good the game-play in this is and it the solid storyline.

The re-playability of this game is also a large plus. Once I beat the game, I have been back and played the game over multiple times trying to finish it in different ways. Each time still held that excitement factor for me.

I would definitely highly recommend this game to anyone!!

I got this game because the ability to switch between characters sounded intriguing. There are three distinct character types: spy, Green Beret, and sniper. Depending on the mission (and where you are in the mission), you can swap between characters which can be in different locations. The sniper might be up in a tower while the Green Beret is down in the thick of the fighting.

The game depends heavily on sneaking around because you're behind enemy lines and are usually surrounded by bad guys. You have stealth weapons that allow you to kill quietly, but then you can sometimes have a full fledged fire fight and still not alert bad guys right around the corner. The spy can also steal uniforms from the bad guys you kill. The higher the rank, the easier it is to avoid recognition as you're walking around in the open. You can also go into a 3rd person view for looking around corners. That came in handy quite often since you really need to know when the guards are facing the other way before you poke your head out from behind cover.

I thought the graphics were about the same quality as COD2. Not high end, even for 2006. The game played smoothly with no problems.

Overall, I thought the game was enjoyable, with its novel way of allowing you to play three different characters. I preferred the missions with the Green Beret because those were more run-and-gun rather than stealth missions. There was sufficient ammo and health and you could actually administer first aid to other team mates (including your alter ego). I ran out of ammo as the sniper a few times, so it helps to pay attention to where the ammo is located. You can bring up a map to locate objectives and ammo. The map is not only helpful, but probably essential to get through the game, since the levels are complex and quite open to exploration.

I thought the game was among the shortest I've played, but not a rip-off or anything, since I only paid $[...] plus shipping for it from one of the marketplace merchants. I think it probably takes about 8-15 hours to get through it. I recommend the game if you like FPS games, aren't going to be disappointed by the slow stealth pace, and pick it up at a bargain price. That isn't to say that this game is 100% stealth, but it isn't nonstop shooting either.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome edition to the current crop of WW2 games,, February 24, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Commandos Strike Force (CD-ROM)
Changes have certainly been a foot since we met the Commandos franchise last. Traditionally an isometric-perspective, strategy-come-puzzle game, the franchise has made the switch to first-person, and it's made a far better fist of it than we'd anticipated. Certainly those who shudder at the mere mention of the first-person Command & Conquer: Renegade has little to fear here.
That said they don't have an awful lot to set their pulses racing either. For Commandos sticks to its formula of having, in this case, three differing troops you can switch between at the touch of the space bar, each of whom has different skills.
Want brute force and firepower? Enter the Green Beret. Need someone to sneak around unnoticed? That's the Spy. Looking for some long range cover? Meet the Sniper. Using the combined skills of all these three, replete with regular switching between them, you tackle a variety of missions that have a pleasant, puzzle-like element to them.
So what's the problem them, you may wonder? In this case, it's the fact that as a first-person shooter it's quite good, as a sniper game it's quite good, and as a stealth game it's quite good. Add them all together, and you have a well-packaged hybrid of game genres that just about glue together. The catch? In every one of the genres it tackles - sniping, action and stealth - it's some distance behind the respective market leaders.
And yet in another cunning review twist, reminiscent of an unproductive day in the '24' story lining department, I'm still edging you towards buying it. Not because it's any great moment in gaming history, but more because it's a nice, tidy and enjoyable first-person action adventure, which may lack special tricks but doesn't fall short when it comes to a damned good challenge.
What's more, even if you were a fan of Commandos in its previous livery, with the isometric intense real-time strategy that's not harmed Eidos' bank account over the past few years; you'll find this a respectful migration to a new perspective.
True, it's been simplified a fair bit, but the thinking and plotting behind Commandos has remained intact. And, in fact, moving to first-person mode appears to have liberated the game designers, who are nowhere near as insistent as they used to be on you tackling certain things in certain orders, with little variation. Good on 'em.
Strike Force may not need much a mantel piece to keep its awards on, but it'd not go without a bit of love in your very own home.

1.0 out of 5 stars Commandos lovers stay away from this, November 12, 2007

For those who loves all the previous Commandos games, this one is a terrible let down. It doesn't have the look and feel of what made Commandos famous and it tried to imitate all the other 1st person shooter and yet failed miserably to do so. There is no distinguishing feature for this latest installment of Commandos that made it shine. I just wanted to get it to complete my Commandos collection, and that would be it. Not something I would pull back down from the shelf and play again.
