Very informative book,
A Kid's Review

During WWII, there was an elite group of soldiers fighting for the allied cause. These men were fearless, relentless, and wouldn't let up until their job was done successfully. These elite fighters went by the name of commando. How much do you really know about what went down behind enemy lines during WWII? The Commandos of Word War II by Hodding Carter is all about who the commandos were and what they did during WWII. It starts off with the forming of the commandos, and goes on to explain ever mission they went through during the war. This is a great, very informative book on an issue that many people don't know much at all about. It is very interesting and held my attention throughout its course.
One thing the author did in this book was use very descriptive vocabulary in important places. An example of a wonderful a use of vivid vocabulary is when the author writes about the conditions on a submarine before an invasion took place. "The tiny interior soon became foul soon after they submerged, and the raiders and the crew had to struggle for each breath. As the oxygen level fell, the two men, trying desperately to put on their rubber suits, suffered hallucinations. As the walls dripped moisture and the stench worsened, the exhausted coppists grew feebler and more irritable." This is the kind of description I like to see in a book. I like the way the author used man different short stories on different missions that the commandos performed, rather than making each one too long to read and comprehend. The stories were short, but very descriptive and precise. The author wrote about 15 different missions that the commandos performed, and varied each one of them to show the real strength and effect the commandos had on WWII. One particular aspect of this book that I liked, was the use of different real stories of people, not just an overview of how everything went down. The author actually uses names and quotes soldiers during battle, giving the reader a much more life-like image of what it was like. A specific example of this is when the author is describing a commander by the name of "Mad Jack" Churchill as he takes over German infantry. " In a moment they were back at their posts. Whirling his claymore (Scottish sword) over his head and screaming " Hande Hoch!"(hands up). While the corporal guarded his prisoners, Mad Jack went prowling sentry posts with his sword." This really showed me that the author knew what he was writing about, and did good research before writing. Overall, The Commandos of Word War II by Hodding Carter is a good book that should be enjoyed by people of all ages and knowledge of WWII. It is a great read for all.

I read the book Commandos of World War II by Hodding Carter. This book contains several stories about World War II. The book is very interesting. Every story was filled with action and suspense. However, there was one story that was not that interesting. It was the first story and it was about a short war where the American soldiers went to attack the Germans. The American troops were being overcome by the Germans; therefore, the American troops retreated. One of my favorite stories was about an invasion by the Americans of an island. The Americans arrived by boat during three different voyages. When the first boat load of American arrived at the island, they were ambushed by the islanders and virtually all of the American soldiers were killed. The second American boat arrived at the island and found a few American survivors. The American soldiers climbed a mountain without being seen. Once they arrived at the top, the American soldiers set mines in cement buildings. Once the mines were planted, the American soldiers left the mountain and returned to the one American boat at the dock and set mines on the boat. The American soldiers boarded the second boat the sailed away. The islanders thought they had won, but the next day the Americans set off the mines on the mountain and in the boat causing the whole island to blow up. This book is very educational on the subject of the Holocaust and the Nazi leader Hitler and other leaders of the Nazis that are not really well known. I learned how the Nazis entered the Jewish lands and captured the Jews. The book contained maps of the voyages and were very interesting to look at. I recommend this book to all people who are interested in learning about the Holocaust.
