5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book, December 10, 1999

Stephane Larochelle (gatineau, quebec, canada) - See all my reviews
This is a terrific book to understand lutheran liturgy. It traces liturgical events to their direct roots in christian history.

And NO, Lutheranism is not a Mickey Mouse religion at all. Whoever claims this obviously has no clue as to what they are taking about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now a Standard Reference Work, August 27, 2011

This review is from: Commentary on the Lutheran Book of Worship: Lutheran Liturgy in Its Ecumenical Context (Hardcover)
Dr. Pfatteicher's work on the Lutheran Book of Worship, though published 21 years ago (on a hymnal published 33 years ago), remains a standard reference for anyone doing research on the liturgy and worship of the Lutheran church. This book is routinely quoted and footnoted in books by other Lutheran scholars (e.g. Just, Maschke), who undoubtedly would recommend this as one of those basic works of reference any serious student of the liturgy should possess. The historical background material alone is worth the purchase. Even though all of the major Lutheran denominations have since produced successor service books to ones published in that era, the essentials of the liturgical forms and calendar remain relatively consistent. Thus, this treasure trove of historical inquiry will remain a classic for students of worship for decades to come.
