For business/management people w/o any technical background,
By John (Dallas, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: E-Commerce Book, The: Building the E-Empire (Communications, Networking and Multimedia) (Hardcover)
I am an e-commerce architect mainly dealing with technical part of the e-commerce rather than the business side of it. I heard good things about the authors' class (I belive it is a lot more technical) that is being taught at the SMU in Dallas so I decided to pick up the book thinking it will save me from attending a $5,000 class.Well, this book is not for those people with technical backgrounds but for those management/business people who doesn't understand the basic concept of what it needs to run succesful e-commerce web sites. If you fit in that category it should be a worthwhile reading I belive. It will give you a good general background info. I would say this is still better than the most e-commerce books I've read but still not good enough. If you are an engineer/programmer/analyst, then don't bother too much with this book.

A truly awful book,
By Rowriver (Oregon) - See all my reviews
This review is from: E-Commerce Book, The: Building the E-Empire (Communications, Networking and Multimedia) (Hardcover)
I reviewed about 20 e-commerce books in preparation for teaching a series of corporate seminars and college courses, and this was easily the weakest of the bunch. The authors must have written this in a weekend. There was very little depth to this treatment - most of it was terribly obvious. No exploration of the more fundamental ways in which e-commerce is changing organization and design of businesses, supply chains, the marketing relationship, etc. These people need to go back to the field to find out what is really happening, not just hang out in their ivory tower. I suggest spending your $$ on one of Ravi Kalakota's books, which are much more thoughtful and original. Were not the market for e-commerce books exploding, this very weak book would never have been published.

Turning your focus to eCommerce? Get this book!,

This review is from: E-Commerce Book, The: Building the E-Empire (Communications, Networking and Multimedia) (Hardcover)
The eCommerce Book is an outstanding resource for those now turning they're focusing to eCommerce. It covers the essential elements for someone in need of a broad understanding of the field. I learned the basics of payment systems, security, auction technology, globalization, and vendor solutions. The simplification of the basic architecture and deployment process for eCommerce was particularly helpful. This is not a dry technical reference book. On the contrary, this is a quick, positive, and enthusiastic read of an exciting and emerging mega-trend. I liked the numerous link-references to interesting and helpful Internet sites relevant to the book. Written by computer scientists, but with a keen attention to business issues, this book was helpful to me for both my engineering and management needs. About the only thing I would suggest would be an appendix with footnotes to technical references for those of us that may need to dig deeper in a certain arcane area. If you are just starting to focus on this area (or if you would like to round out your knowledge of this broad field), then this is the book for you!

An Arrow in the Heart of e-Commerce,
By
This review is from: E-Commerce Book, The: Building the E-Empire (Communications, Networking and Multimedia) (Hardcover)
As an Executive Consultant for one of North Americas top seven information technology companies it is my job to help the executives define their e-Business strategy. This book is a must read if you want to be successful in the implementation of an e-Business Strategy or the adoption of e-Commerce technology. We use this book and customers.com as the bibles we give to CEO's, CFO's and CIO's during our week long e-Business Strategy sessions. Since we are highly paid to prepare these sessions we want our customers to have the best e-Commerce references on their desks when we leave..this is the best reading and reference book available.

Is it enough for building the e-empire?,
By
This review is from: E-Commerce Book, The: Building the E-Empire (Communications, Networking and Multimedia) (Hardcover)
As an IT professional, I was a bit (just a bit) disappointed with the content of book. The authors have done a very good job in including almost all points that need to be looked into in an e-commerce environment, but as in all "all-in-one" books, some areas, especially those that fall into the realm of business strategy, are left weak. Even in the first four chapters, where e-commerce strategies and approaches are set out, I felt an inclination towards the technical side of e-commerce. However, the book is very successful in conveying different architectures, together with the pros and cons, to the reader who has the basic knowledge about internet technology. I believe that this is not enough to "build the e-empire", but the book has enough potential to act as an infrastructural guide and a reference for e-commerce deployment projects, especially for project managers and executives.

A very insightful reading,
By Vibishan Vellore (vibishan@earthlink.net) (Orange County, California) - See all my reviews

For many of us who know E-commerce as a buzzword, this book fleshes out the concepts and current practices clearly. The book is written in a simple, unassuming style covering all aspects of E-commerce and effectively clears up the complexities of E-commerce. This book contains many useful resources and references. I would recommend this book for any one who has little or no knowledge of E-commerce and for those who are looking for a road map for implementing an E-commerce strategy.I am a student of E-commerce at California State University, Fullerton. This book was picked out over many other books as a prime reference guide.

Not what I E-Xpected,

This review is from: E-Commerce Book, The: Building the E-Empire (Communications, Networking and Multimedia) (Hardcover)
I had hoped that this book would provide me with insights and techniques I did not already know. I am a technology professional but have not focused on e-commerce to date. I did not really learn anything new; readers of some of the trade rags (CIO, InformationWeek, Red Herring, Industry Standard, etc) will probably not benefit from the book. I will concede the difficulty of writing a book in a rapidly changing environment, but it was still too general to be of much use.

The E-Commerce Rosetta Stone For Geeks,
By DrOrb "DrOrb" (SW Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: E-Commerce Book, The: Building the E-Empire (Communications, Networking and Multimedia) (Hardcover)
A very strong right-brained approach to E-Commerce. Sure, there's plenty of technical tomes with more by-the-numbers advice, but this book represents the users better than any I've read. This is for those who know 'how' to build a site, but don't know why one is a hit and another disappears.

This review is from: E-Commerce Book, The: Building the E-Empire (Communications, Networking and Multimedia) (Hardcover)
This book would have been helpfull in 1995, but now it's full of out-of-date information. There's absolutly nothing worth of information in it, so save your money and buy customers.com instead.

Extremely disappointing. overly simplistic, no real insights, and it does not deliver the essential information I was lead to believe it contained. I advise you to go elsewhere.
