Book Description

Biblical Perspectives on Current Issues April 29, 2003

In our turbulent world, it sometimes seems difficult to forge and maintain the bonds of a committed, loving relationship. In The Committed Marriage, Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis, esteemed teacher, counselor, and matchmaker, helps even the most pressured modern couples find harmony and unity, guided by the timeless wisdom ofthe Torah.

From her first match, made at the age of sixteen, the Rebbetzin has helped innumerable singles find their soul mates, and even more married couples strengthen their commitment, start families, and find renewed joy and meaning in their lives.

Each chapter focuses on a specific dilemma or challenge that the Rebbetzin has helped couples to solve or overcome so that they emerge with a stronger relationship and a deeper faith. Starting with the first stages of finding a soul mate, through the challenges of communicating with compassion and understanding, from debates over parenthood, to growing old in harmony, these real-life success stories reflect the practicality and endurance of traditional values. The Committed Marriage demonstrates how the power of prayer and biblical wisdom can heal even the most fractured bonds, how one may find joy and fulfillment in child-rearing, and the importance of being a good friend to yourself and to your mate. These chapters are rich with anecdotes and true-life stories that speak to your heart and mind. The Rebbetzin's faith and depth of under-standing will inspire you and strengthen your relationship.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Determined to provide sound advice and encouragement for any marriage on the rocks, as well as for singles and couples who have not yet experienced the challenges of living together, Rebbetzin Jungreis (The Committed Life) depicts the problems people face and offers guidance for getting through them. Those accustomed to the "disposable" life-who get rid of any hindrance to what is perceived as happiness-will find that this Torah-based relationship manual is hardly for them. The Rebbetzin (Hebrew term for a rabbi's wife) shares her own matrimonial stories, which exude confidence that one can lead a life of peace and fulfillment, as long as understanding, giving, compromise and hard work are fully integrated into one's marriage. "Marriage is not a business partnership-it's not even give-and-take, but it's give and give more. Giving is a prerequisite to genuine love, although people mistakenly believe that just the opposite is true." Jungreis speaks with the authority of a psychologist and marriage counselor, the wisdom of a biblical scholar and the compassion of a wife and mother. She offers much of the advice already proffered by other relationship experts, but her inclusion of God and religion makes these stories and recommendations unique. She claims firsthand involvement in all of her vignettes, and since they all end successfully-a divorce called off, a lifetime dispute settled-it seems prudent to call on the Rebbetzin should trouble arise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rebbetzin Jungreis is a well-spring of wisdom!, July 8, 2003

This review is from: The Committed Marriage: A Guide to Finding a Soul Mate and Building a Relationship Through Timeless Biblical Wisdom (Biblical Perspectives on Current Issues) (Hardcover)
The wisdom shared by Rebbetzin Jungreis reaches deep into the soul of humankind, having meaning and appeal both to the Jew and the non-Jew alike. If you like the writings of authors such as Chaim Potok, Isaac Singer, and Nathan Ausubel, you will love Rebbetzin Jungreis.

Drink from her well-spring of wisdom to receive health and nourishment for your marriage as she quotes from the Torah, Talmud, the sages, and adds a wealth of information from her personal experiences as well.

These all combine to weave a beautiful tapestry of love, unity, and mutual respect between the husband and wife as they bring the revealed will of The Almighty into clear focus for their marriage.

In addition to this book, I highly recommend that you also purchase her book entitled "The Committed Life" and read them as a combined set. The wisdom in both books will enrich and change your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to establish, maintain, and restore a good marriage., July 28, 2003
This review is from: The Committed Marriage: A Guide to Finding a Soul Mate and Building a Relationship Through Timeless Biblical Wisdom (Biblical Perspectives on Current Issues) (Hardcover)
Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis is well known for her Torah outreach, her lectures, and her popular newspaper column. She is also the author of "The Committed Life," in which she wrote about the spiritual rewards of living according to the laws of the Torah. In her latest book, "The Committed Marriage," Rebbetizin Jungreis convincingly shows that a man and woman whose marriage is faltering may be able to revitalize their relationship by learning from the wisdom of the Torah.

Jungreis wisely avoids lecturing the reader. She presents many pertinent and interesting anecdotes, which demonstrate the importance of treating your partner with respect, communicating with him or her effectively, and persevering when the going gets tough. The reason that Jungreis's words do not come across as didactic and condescending is that she infuses her advice with love, compassion, and deep psychological understanding. Jungreis's beautiful writing style flows smoothly and effortlessly. Her warmth and concern shine through and embrace the reader. The book is enhanced by Rebbetzin Jungreis's frequent and personal allusions to the words and actions of her late father and husband, since these two spiritual giants exemplified the purest Torah values.

Cynics may dismiss the ideas brought forth in "The Committed Marriage" as simple common sense. However, in our self-centered society, too many people hide behind their busy schedules; they neglect the most important relationships in their lives, until they realize that it is too late to turn back. It is unfortunate, but true, that common sense is increasingly uncommon.

I recommend "The Committed Marriage" for those who want to have a more meaningful, harmonious, and joyous marriage.
