Biography

One of the most popular reggae bands in the world, Third World is also the most enduring. Jamaica's longest-running self-contained band (only The Wailers existed when Third World was formed in 1973), the group has not only been hailed as the "reggae ambassador" but is often credited as the first reggae act to incorporate funk, Philly soul, hip-hop, South African township music, and even… Read more in Amazon's Third World Store

3.0 out of 5 stars When I get to the last track I see some hope here!, March 12, 2008

The last track is "Give the people what they need"; a bit of a play on words I see on the Kinks' "Give the people what they want" and it is a song really in a Ska vain as far as I can tell with a cool horn section riff. Yey guys, maybe you should have pursued this direction and made the whole CD like this one.

You know, I may be wrong and if anyone wishes to debate this point of view they are welcome to but I don't think this is a very strong effort. I see AMG gave this CD 4 stars so I thought they are usually reliable, I'll try it. I don't mind trying any TW disc, they've got about 5 or 6 great CDs, the early ones with primitive type paintings on the record covers and then, Rock the World, You've got the power followed by Love you with a sense of purpose which isn't that strong but does have it's moments.

Now, "Riddim haffe rule" the opening tune is alright here but not great. "Committed" is a love song really, I thought it was going to be about being committed to the Rastafarian ways especially with the album being titled that and the cover photo but really, it's soft but listenable.

After that, more or less it seems like fillersville until track 9 "Mi Legal" and 10 "State of siege" which might be a bit better than average but really, when there are so many good artists out there from classic to new, Alpha Blondy to Yellowman, it's not a CD to really go after except for completists. You know, we can listen to Lucky Dube or something. That said, there are other artists out there as well who don't have efforts better than this. It seems that some have lost the plot.

There is some Third World that I think is great and that is their own niche, not what Toots and the Maytals, the Wailers or others did but releases like this don't hit that mark.

But I like that last track but even it could have been better!
