4.0 out of 5 stars A good retro-laced EP
If you're going to go retro you've got a fine line to straddle. Go too far into homage and people wonder why you're even doing it (hello, that Orgy cover of "Blue Monday!") If you play up the satire end of it, you sound too much like a novelty record. Ladytron does a good job of setting themselves up in original territory without getting too smart for their own good. 4.0 out of 5 stars A good retro-laced EP, March 1, 2001
This review is from: Commodore Rock EP: Play Girl / Commodore Rock / Miss Black / Paco - 4 track EP (Audio CD)
The EP sounds good, and part of it may be the short length of it - I wonder if the full album would just grate after a while (another reason to keep the EP format alive!) The punchy beatbox attack of "Commodore Rock" is fun, reminiscent of those great Afrika Bambaataa discs. The other side of the coin is the more laid-back "Play Girl" that balances beats with a languid vocal. A fun EP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great EP, collectors only, December 22, 2006

Just out of complusive collecting I bought this EP. While its a steady little disc the only track on here I believe that is on here that isn't on "604" the short track "Miss Black", which most fans can look over without losing much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beatbox with New Wave sinsibilities., October 20, 2001

What a single! With beatbox driven songs and sarcastic lyrics, LadyTron has an Elastica meets Kraftwerk-like sound. The lead vocals bring images of Elastica to mind, a sort of Art School stuck up...(in a clever way). The instrumentals are wounderful and on the single you get "Miss.Black" which dose not appear on the full length album. "Commodore Rock" is a track with a wounderful analoge bass sound. Euro synth pop gets a much needed makeover.

Ladytron got me with the killer use of the synthesizers and the spoken vocals. "Play Girl" is an addictive track that could chill a room down. "Commodore Rock", "Miss Black" and "Paco" hit with about the same intensity. Recommended, also check out '604' for more fresh tunes.

I love it!! If you like Chicks on Speed, you will probobly like this. It has a nice independant done-in-yourbasement freestyle-ish feel to it, and it really works good. Balancing more on layerd synth chords and organ sounds, it has a more mellow electro sound rather than the kind of ecclectic sound persued by C.O.S. I really reccomend this, and I am looking forward to hearing the LP.

Taking queues from Post-punk, and early 80's Minimalist, New Wave soul - Ladyrton constructs riffs resembling Gang of 4, Gary Numan, with a dash of Mantronix hip-hop thrown in for measure. Beatboxes, Synth melodies, and songs about shopping - Now that's what I call a retro-throwback to the Reagan/Thatcher years!
