Book Description

February 20, 2012 0979862191 978-0979862199 1
A school year includes many odd sorts of days.
  • You unexpectedly finish a unit on Thursday and don't want to start a new one until Monday.
  • Holidays or special events make regular lessons difficult.
  • You're sick and need a substitute teacher for a day.
This group of seasonal ELA and writing lessons is designed to fill in those odd days with fun, easy, lessons which require a minimum of preparation and yet still meet the needs of the Common Core State Standards. We suggest activities for each month, but most activities are flexible enough for any season. Meets Common Core Curriculum Needs Each lesson is correlated to appropriate Common Core curriculum maps.

The Common Core State Standards (corestandards.com) include ten anchor standards each for writing and reading and six anchor standards for language. Each ELA activity in this book will list the anchor standards addressed, thus making them flexible enough to fit any grade level. Each activity is meant to be:
  • Flexible
  • Fast and easy preparation
  • Fun for students
  • Aligned to the CCSS
  • Correlated to CCSS curriculum maps

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money. June 25, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this book with the hopes of finding some resource that would tie the new standards in with classroom activities. This book is a compilation of everything we have seen throughout the years with a brand new heading "common core." Nothing is new and no standards are thoroughly addressed. This was a complete waste of money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Huh? Really? July 12, 2012
By K.M.
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is ABSOLUTELY a waste of money! Took less than 45 minutes to read through, and it contained nothing that I would consider innovative or even interesting. I guess putting the words "common core" on a book will make it sell, even when there is no substance. Save your $$.

I returned this book the same day it arrived. Believe the one star reviews. I was very disappointed in the lack of fresh ideas and the weak common core connections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Sub Plan/Fill in material August 16, 2012
By V. Byrd
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Darcy is complete and thorough in preparing these fill-in assignments. I was surprised to read the negative reviews; this little book provides complete lessons that can be adapted to various grade and ability levels. This is a good introduction to comparing Common Core to traditional frameworks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of great suggestions June 25, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a great collection of writing lessons for elementary students that can be used throughout the school year. These seasonal writing prompts will sharpen the skills needed to write argument, informative and narrative texts, based on the objectives of the CCSS. It is filled with a variety of ways these prompts could be used. As the author suggests, these units would be a nice fit for times when teachers have a short time slot to fill. Well thought out and would be a helpful resource to have on hand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Common Core ELA Activities August 7, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was very disappointed by this book. The activities were so lower level and just not suitable for the regular education student. Might be a good piece of supplimentary material for special ed.
