Book Description

April 12, 2012 0325042934 978-0325042930 Spi
"To reach their potential, children need an engaging environment and a reason to learn. This book is aimed at helping teachers implement quality Common Core instruction around this principle."
-Gretchen Owocki

The quality of instruction is the most important factor in helping students meet the Common Core Standards. That's why Gretchen Owocki's Common Core Lesson Book empowers teachers with a comprehensive framework for implementation that enhances existing curriculum and extends it to meet Common Core goals.

"Children," writes Gretchen (author of The RTI Daily Planning Book), "need teachers who believe in the power of meaningful reading as a context for instruction." She breaks the CCSS reading standards into manageable chunks that emphasize engaged, authentic reading and differentiated teaching. For each standard, she offers:
  • a clear description of what it asks from students
  • an instructional decision tree that connects assessment to planning
  • instructional strategies that gradually release responsibility to students
  • techniques for intensifying instruction when readers need more support.

"In implementing the standards," writes Gretchen, "we want children to deeply engage with multiple forms of reading. I wrote this book to offer encouragement to stay grounded in meaningful instruction, and to offer a set of strategies that emphasize meaningful reading." Respond to the Common Core with The Common Core Lesson Book-you'll help students meet the standards, and so much more.

About the Author

Gretchen Owocki powerfully demonstrates the importance of bringing meaningful instruction to not only traditional reading-instruction topics like comprehension, but also to contemporary issues such as Common Core and RTI. In the bestselling titles The Common Core Lesson Book; The Common Core Writing Book; and The RTI Daily Planning Book, she masterfully breaks down instructional issues and strategies into manageable chunks that help teachers differentiate instruction, meet curricular goals, and improve as practitioners. For more than 15 years, she has helped teachers find researched-based practices that improve learning by letting students experience curriculum as part of their own development. In other Heinemann titles such as Comprehension; Make Way for Literacy; and Time for Literacy Centers, she shares teaching that engages students through authentic, meaningful tasks and challenges them to grow as readers and writers. A professor at Saginaw Valley State University, Gretchen is a Heinemann Professional Development Services provider. » Read Gretchen's article "Setting a Course to Maximize the Potential of CCSS" in the Heinemann PD Journal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource April 18, 2012
Format:Spiral-bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
I rarely write reviews for the professional materials that I purchase but this is well worth the effort. I am the Common Core crazy person in my school. I have tons of resources on the Common Core but this one gives practical strategies for each of the standards. What I really like about the book is that it has strategies for ELL students and intensive work for students that need the reinforcement. Do you probably use some of these srtategies? Yes, but the book will help you organize and focus on a specific standard. I love the graphic organizers. The ONLY thing that would make this book even better would be examples of how the author uses the graphic organizers. While Lucy Calkins' book can give you overall information on the Common Core this book is practical and teacher friendly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! February 3, 2013
Format:Spiral-bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
I teach first grade and have found many useful things in this book.

A wealth of printable pages that help with main idea, beginning-middle-end, etc. They make great exit slips and help keep my instruction focused.

I've used things from the book in large group instruction, small group instruction and literacy centers.

I would highly recommend this to fellow elementary educators.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful Resource! December 1, 2012
By Sarah
Format:Spiral-bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
At a time when many teachers are scrambling to begin implementing the Common Core State Standards in their classrooms, I found this book a helpful resource to have around as I try to raise the rigor of my reading instruction. There are many reproducible graphic organizers as well as quick blurbs to tailor instruction to each grade level. I've found it easy to flip through and find activities to relate to concepts that are already present in my district's scope and sequence. I'm not sure that most of the ideas are anything too earth-shattering, but it is helpful to have lots of CCSS ideas grouped into one handy text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!!! January 26, 2013

Excellent book in understanding and implementing the common core standards. After receiving my Masters in Reading, I had some ahh-ah moments while reading the text. I was able to relate to my studies and felt comfortable putting it into practice in the classroom. 4.5 stars...only because I wish a CD was included for copying the graphic organizers. Copying may be difficult because of the spiral book.
