Rita Macneil is not a great singer in my opionion, but she has proven herself to be a gifted songwriter over the years. This collection has some interesting material like the gospel-flavoured "Said I wasn't gonna tell nobody" and an okay version of Peace In The Valley, but is spoiled by an over-dramatic and occasionally out-of-tune Higher Power. Overall, the album's celtic flavour is a benefit, but as a "spiritual album" it doesn't compare with my other spiritual CDs.

Looking for gospel music? Tired of hearing hackneyed pop rock on your Christian radio station? Then you'll absolutely love Rita MacNeil's "Common Dream". The songs showcase Rita's beautiful voice. You'll be uplifted by these wonderful songs. I use this CD as background music- as I'm cleaning or working out- and I always hear a lyric that hits home. My personal favorites are the third and fourth tracks, as they show us the happiness and promise of eternal rest and ETERNAL LIFE!!! :)

I think Catholics will especially like this CD. We are often marginalized on Christian boradcast radio. Catholic radio doesn't stream enough, which is sad. This CD is a start, though!!!

(PS- I came across Rita MacNeil's talent on my trip to Cape Breton Island, NS. Rita's restaurant sounded nice, so I stopped by. I picked up "Common Dream" because it showcased gospel, a concept I love but is often butchered. I've sold A LOT of cds over the years, but I'll never part with this one!!!)

This is a great cd to get in touch with your spirtual side. It's really entertaing. all of Rita's songs come from the heart and this deserves to do well.
