3.0 out of 5 stars Not A Good Primary Choice, June 22, 2009
This small book contains 105 species and weighs 3.6 ounces on my scale and is 8.5"x5.5"-important for backpackers. I bought it because of its low price, light weight for backpacking, and as a second source to my "Edible and Medicinal Plants of the West" by Tilford which is excellent. Unlike the Tilford guide, the plants in this book are categorized according to trees, shrubs, vines, herbs, and water plants as all plant guides should be for easier look up. The sketches are only average which is a big problem with an identification book. Photographs are far superior to even the best drawings, but photographic paper is much heavier. The descriptions and common uses of the plants are also sketchy, but like the author says the book contains only the most important and common edible plants of the West. So I would not recommend the book for the beginner and only maybe for the more experienced forager for reminders on plant uses while out hiking because of the book's light weight.
