Hennessey gives a very clear introduction to basic LISP programming techniques, syntax and usage. He assumes little or no previous programming experience and while his book may not cover the more erudite uses that LISP is commonly used for, I would recommend it highly to a beginner, as it satisfies his needs exactly to the level where he can start learning to be a serious LISP programmer.
