More About the Author

Juliette was born on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1912 in Manchester, England. She was educated at Lowther College, one of the best girls schools in Britain, and went on to study veterinary medicine at the Universities of Manchester and Liverpool.

However, Juliette did not approve of the vivisection and animal experimentation that was going on in the universities, so she left university after two years and went to study with the Gypsies and peasants of the world.

In the late 1930's Juliette ran a distemper clinic in London where, at a time when many dogs were dying from this disease, she treated and cured hundreds of dogs with fasting, herbs and a natural diet.

When many Afghan hound puppies were dying of distemper, Juliette raised a litter of puppies on her natural rearing methods and these puppies won Best of Show at Crufts Dog Show.

In the 1930's Juliette developed a line of herbal supplements for animals known as Natural Rearing Products. For the next 50 years these were the only products of their kind on the market. Today these supplements are still distributed world wide.

During World War II, Juliette worked in the Women's Land Army gathering sphagnum moss which was used on soldiers' wounds. After the war she went to Yorkshire where she cured thousands of sheep who had been declared incurable by conventional vets.

In the 1940's, while travelling in America, Spain, France, North Africa and Turkey, Juliette gathered herbal remedies from the nomadic and peasant peoples of these lands. When her Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm and Stable was published in 1951, it was the first veterinary herbal ever to be published as before this time, the art of farriers, gypsies and peasants had been passed on only by the spoken word.

Thus Juliette became THE pioneer of what is known today as holistic animal care. She went on to write The Complete Herbal Book for the Dog. Both these books together with Juliette's Illustrated Herbal Handbook for Everyone and Natural Rearing of Children have become classics and many generations of humans & animals have been raised & healed on these books.

Juliette became famous for saving her hives of bees from shell attack during the six day war. In Israel and later when she moved to Greece, Juliette continued to write, to raise Afghan hounds, to garden and to gather herbal remedies. As well as her herbal books, she has written several travel books, two novels and three books of poems.

Juliette de Bairacli Levy is a world renowned herbalist, author, breeder of Afghan hounds, friend of the Gypsies, traveller in search of herbal wisdom, and the pioneer of holistic veterinary medicine. Juliette has a long record of spectacular cures to her credit and the books she has written have been a vital inspiration for the present day herbal renaissance, (born 11.11.1912 deceased 5.28.2009). Juliette is the author of many books including Traveler's Joy, Common Herbs for Natural Health, Natures Children, Spanish Mountain Life, Summer in Galelie, A Gypsy In New York, all in print by Ash Tree Publishing, and more titles now out of print.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for living life in a natural way, September 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Common Herbs for Natural Health (Herbals of Our Foremothers) (Paperback)
I ordered this wonderful book last year because I was interested in herbal medicine. Since that time, I have used this book countless times for common ailments like colds, flu, bug bites, scrapes, bruises, etc. In almost every case, the recommendations given by Ms. Levy work as well or better than expensive, over the counter medications & salves. Some of the herbal recommendations, including using fresh basil on insect bites have results which are almost miraculous. I highly recommend this book. It's very interesting reading as well, Ms. Bairacli Levy infuses it with her life experiences garnered by learned about herbal medicine from indigenous people around the world. I cannot say enough about this book...it is one of the best and most helpful books I've ever bought.

I was astonished at the vast amount of invaluable information I found in the pages of COMMONS HERBS FOR NATURAL HEALTH (Herbals of Our Foremothers) by Juliette de Bairacli Levy. Readers will be rewarded by a detailed listing of 200 worldwide herbs. You will learn how to find them, store them, and prepare them to help treat many common ailments. Don't be surprised if the recipes contained in the back of the book will have you searching your yard late at night for the intriguing ingredients.

This book is a must-read for any herbalist enthusiast, or anyone who has a slight interest in alternative medicine. I can easily see this book being passed on from generation to generation; the information is priceless. After reading this treasure, it fully convinced me to change the topic of my college thesis. I'm happy to say I couldn't have read any better book to start me on the path of learning this ancient tradition.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE HEALING POWER OF HERBS, June 26, 2001

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Common Herbs for Natural Health (Herbals of Our Foremothers) (Paperback)
My grandmother was an immigrant from Russia and with her transition to this country in the late 1800's came a wealth of knowledge of herbs and their power to heal. To this day, I still use herbs in the treatment of many minor health problems from colds, sore throats, insect bites, minor infections, headaches and symptoms of menopause.

"Common Herbs for Natural Health" brings back memories of my grandmother's garden where fresh herbs grew abundant, and her kitchen which contained herbs of every description. Many of the uses for herbs found in this back are generations old; They are tried and true - they worked then and they work now. That is not to say, herbs are the solution for every illness. For example, I would never attempt to treat a serious infection with herbs alone, but they certainly do have their time and place, as this book will indicate. Herbs can be an optimum solution to many problems. Since they are a natural source, they generally have fewer side effects, as long as you know and understand what herbs not to blend together. They are also less costly than medications found on a store shelf. This books contains a vast amount of information on the herbs and suggests which ones to use for various treatments. It is a book anyone who is a believer in natural health care and healing will want to own.
