5.0 out of 5 stars Episcopal Book of Common Prayer
This B.C.P.is a very convenient size to carry. It is easy to read, even in a dimly lit 233 year old church. Page by page and paragraph by paragraph, it is identical to the larger heavier pew copies of the Book of Common Prayer. The leather cover is a joy to hold with the feel of elegance, but without the elegant price tag. This book is an exceptional value.

The description says leatherbound; the edition, of which I purchased two for newly baptized in our church, is bound in imitation leather. Please review the rite for the reconciliation of a penitent (p. 447) and contact me to arrange an appointment! Fr. John

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful way to start your day, August 13, 2005

I bought the Book of Common Prayer to replace the one I received at confirmation which was unfortunately lost during a recent move. This is a particularly nice and attractive book, with a soft but durable cover and onion-skin paper. It will provide great utility, and makes for wonderful readings, though often brief, at the beginning of the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prayer Book, July 5, 2005

This is the Epicopal Churches Book of Common Prayer. It is a great size, just small enough to carry in luggage, book bag, or purse, but still is readable. Good choice for those who like to have their own copy of the BCP.

4.0 out of 5 stars good price for a quality product, March 9, 2007

As a new Episcopalian, I decided to buy the Book of Common Prayer. The feel of the book is very soft and has the thin paper pages that many bibles are printed on. It has a book mark/ribbon to keep up with the journey of the Episcopal service each week. The book was smaller than I expected, but still a great size to carry around. Top knotch in quality and a great buy for the new recruit or the hardened, weathered Episcopal.

This book is so helpful. There are times when you just can't find the words, particularly in times of stress or sorrow. There are prayers and scripture for all occasions, regardless of your demonination. I would recommend to anyone searching to improve their prayer life.

It's a little daunting to be reviewing a recognized masterpiece by an English master, Thomas Cranmer. But here goes.

In the 1970's some hippie parodied the Whole Earth Catalog's review of Buber's I and Thou. The hippie stole the opening: You can read this book in a few hours, but it can change your life. He applied it to the Book of Common Prayer. I would not go that far, but it pays to be humble before its greatness.

I grew up with this book and returned to it in the 1970's. I could no more criticize its Elizabethan cadences than I could pull Shakespeare apart. The new prayer book has services in the old language as well as modern language versions.

As a meditator, not a churchgoer, I don't hear a lot of poetic imagery. The Psalms and the old version of the services are full of great images. The lectionary guides you through the Bible pretty systematically for additional vivid writing. I regret that the new prayer book has replaced the collect for the 2nd Sunday in Advent, Bible Sunday, as it was called. I remember fondly the old language referring to the scriptures:: [grant that] we may hear them, read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them ... This is a mere quibble. If I believed and wanted to practice the Christian faith as I did earlier, this book would be invaluable to me. It provides me now with a walk down memory lane.

The 1928 Prayer Book is still in print and there are those who prefer it. My return to services included the approval period for this book and its adoption. So the present version has nostalgic value for me.

The 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Leather Bound (Burgundy)

Bought five of these to keep two and to donate three to our church. These are very nice personal size editions from Oxford Press, with sewn pages and very nice REAL leather over soft covers. After I presented my church staff with the three books that I bought for them, they requested that I purchase ten more in their behalf to present to our next confirmation class. These are wonderful, well made books and Amazon makes it very easy to buy when they offer their super saver shipping.
Thank you Amazon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Searching, January 18, 2008
This review is from: The 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Leather Bound (Burgundy) (Imitation Leather)
As a fairly new comer to the BCP (Book of Common Prayer) I was a bit undecided about which type to get. Having seen the pew versions, I wanted one which was both pleasing to the eye as well as useful. Though the print in not for those who have difficulty reading small print, I found this small volume just as complete as the larger pew volumes, as well as pleasant to use. This volume makes for not only a useful and pleasing personal volume but would also be a most worthy gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet Little Chapel in a book, March 28, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Leather Bound (Burgundy) (Imitation Leather)
This classic, the 1979 Book of Common Prayer is copyright free, and was made available to all Christians. It is a handy little book to carry around, a little chapel to retreat to at a moments notice. It is a Sacred Space, available to all. Even for sects who do not use rites and ceremonies, I find the idea of lighting a candle a beautiful mental pause. You can open to almost any page, to read an uplifting thought, a quiet prayer. As Mary Baker Eddy had intended for her Science and Health with key to the Scriptures, when she did not renew her copyright (it was much later renewed by the board of directors)--both books were intended for all denominations to use, enjoy, and be blessed. The lettering is very readable, the pages are easy on the eyes, the cover is soft and bendable. It is a treasure. I wrote down my sects special thoughts in the front area of the book, it takes ballpoint pen beautifully with no "bleeding". So, even if you are of another Christian sect, or none, enjoy this book, treasure it. Know the Good-Will and Friendship intended by the Episcopalians. Jot down any special prayers you use to "Sanctify" this and make it your own Little Chapel, your special place to visit, linger, and enjoy. My prayer of gratitude to the Episcopalians for sharing, and to those who worked so hard over the centuries to make this the timeless treasure that it is.
