Long overdue!,

This review is from: The 1979 Book of Common Prayer and The New Revised Standard Version Bible with the Apocrypha (Leather Bound)
Finally available again, this compact volume of the Book of Common Prayer '79 and the NRSV Bible is a hit! It's small size, yet very readable type as well as high quality leather binding make this my daily companion to praying the Office. This should have been in print years ago, but I'm sure glad it's here today...you won't be disappointed!

fabulous combo: BCP, Aprocrypha, and NRSV,
By Anne E. Byrd "Annie" (Minnesota usa) - See all my reviews

I couldn't be more pleased with this combo. The text of the BCP is set in a larger size font than the Bible. But still, the Bible is perfectly legible. The paper is thin to make the book a reasonable size, but it is fine quality, with no show through. The size makes the book totable, which I really prize. I have begun reading the Daily Office which is specified for each day in the BCP Lectionary. Wonderful to have NRSV and BCP and Apocrypha all in one volume. Easy to pack for travel and tote about. And I never tire of the rich language of the BCP, in which I find deep meaning. Not bad looking either with a burgandy and black pliable cover that has the look of leather, but is probably an imitation material. No matter because I got more than my money's worth.

As mentioned by several reviewers, this is a relatively smaller pairing of the '79 BCP and the NRSV (w/Apocrypha). For me, this replaced a duo of the same books that were approximately the same size. Having both of these volumes in one book makes for easier transitions during public worship. Also, this set is great for those who would like to develop the rhythms of praying the daily offices. You have the liturgy, lectionary, and biblical text all in one place. I am a fan of the compact size, though it would be nice if there was a larger version available as well.
The binding is a leather-like product (I don't think it is real leather). It is stitched around the edges giving both an aesthetically pleasing look and a study product. The brown on brown is quite attractive and the material is soft to the touch. The only down side to this is the fact that there are only 3 ribbons. I find that I would use at least 2-3 additional ones regularly. This can be remedied easily by purchasing ones that can be added in. Overall, I think you will be happy with this set as long as you are okay with the compact nature of it.

A helpful time saver,

Although i really love this volume for ease of use, the type is very small and my eyesight is not as good as it once was. Hoping for a larger type format of the same volume to come available. The other rub is the RCL now used in the Episcopal Church is not used in this edition.

My daily companion,

This book is small, which is what I love about it. It is so nice to have the Book of Common Prayer and Bible all together. I can pray the Daily Offices and read the Lectionary without going back and forth between two books. I can easily take it with me anywhere I go. The type is small, especially in the Bible section, but it is large enough to read if you have normal eyesight. If you like a small, convenient, easy to carry Prayer Book and Bible, this is a great choice. It is very attractive, and a great value here. (I found it for sale elsewhere for $75.) If you want a larger book or need large type, this book wouldn't be right for you.

While this is a beautiful volume I wish I had had the option of looking at the print size because it is quite small. Due to my need for reading glasses I would probably have shopped for one with larger print for better ease of use.

I have really enjoyed this Purchase. The size is perfest for me to carry to church and to be able to read and study them together is a plus. I recommend it to all. It zips for practicallity and keeping small notes inside safe.

Too small and compressed,

The book is much too small and thus the print is miniscule. It is definitely not for elderly persons with poor or fading eyesight. The Bible section might require a magnifying glass for even those with perfect vision.
All the poetry of the earlier Prayer Book and certainly of the King James' version of the Bible has been done away with for a mundane prosaic translation that ironically is not easier to understand than that with which we grew up. Alas, it is yet another example of the rule of our present time: "If it's good, they discontinue it". |
