Book Description

W. L. Moody Jr. Natural History Series January 1, 1979
This new printing of Gould's classic includes a key to updated names of grasses, prepared by Stephan L. Hatch. This convenient reference guide to the 150 most familiar and important grass species in Texas includes a line drawing and botanical description for each. "A careful morphological description is provided for each species, together with a brief account of its distribution in Texas, its habitat, and its uses. Each description is accompanied by a beautifully drawn illustration of the habit of the plant and a detail of the flower structure. . . . drawings and specific descriptions are excellent, and the book fulfills its title perfectly." --American Reference Books Annual "A careful morphological description is provided for each species, together with a brief account of its distribution in Texas, its habitat, and its uses. Each description is accompanied by a beautifully drawn illustration of the habit of the plant and a detail of the flower structure. . . . drawings and specific descriptions are excellent, and the book fulfills its title perfectly." --American Reference Books Annual (1980) " . . . an excellent reference book for anyone interested in identifying the varieties of grass which grow in Texas." --Texas Association of Nurserymen "Gould's technical taxonomic treatment is now popularized for the amateur botanist and rancher. . . . Foresters will be using this manual as multiple-use management further evolves, for growth of range forage for livestock and game will accompany fiber production to supply the state's mills. A glossary and an opening section enable use of the keys by those with only an elementary knowledge of botanical nomenclature." --Texas Forestry

4.0 out of 5 stars for the grass enthousiast, July 17, 2007
This review is from: Common Texas Grasses: An Illustrated Guide (W. L. Moody Jr. Natural History Series) (Paperback)
This book has excellent detailed drawings of the whole plant, and the bloom or seed head. The descriptions of the grasses are thorough and include fair-excellent ratings on wildlife and or cattle grazing. For a native grass enthousiast or a rancher, this book is excellent.

Many grasses have similar visual attributes, though. For the average person who has no previous knowledge of grasses and no alternate source with actual photos, this resource could be confusing by itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Texas Grass identification, November 9, 2008

This isn't an all inclusive book, but it does have most of the common grasses in Texas. It is definately a book that can be brought with you into the field in areas that you might not be familiar with all of the grasses.

We have a wildlife management program for our rural property. I purchased this book to help me identify the plants we have growing here. I am learning to tell the native grasses from imported varieties. This book has nice illustrations and good information. I might prefer photographs to help identify but these illustrations are pretty good. Unfortunately since I got the book we have had the worst drought ever in this area of Texas. I haven't been able to identify any grass because nothing is growing. What a disappointment.

However I like the book because it tells about each type of grass, where it prefers to grow, what type of wildlife eats it etc. It is easy to read not too scientific. When it does use scientific terms there is an illustration pointing out what part of the plant they are referring to which is helpful in learning to identify them.

I'll have to decide later whether or not it is helpful in identifying the actual grasses when or if this drought ever ends.
