for the grass enthousiast,
This review is from: Common Texas Grasses: An Illustrated Guide (W. L. Moody Jr. Natural History Series) (Paperback)
This book has excellent detailed drawings of the whole plant, and the bloom or seed head. The descriptions of the grasses are thorough and include fair-excellent ratings on wildlife and or cattle grazing. For a native grass enthousiast or a rancher, this book is excellent.
Many grasses have similar visual attributes, though. For the average person who has no previous knowledge of grasses and no alternate source with actual photos, this resource could be confusing by itself.

This isn't an all inclusive book, but it does have most of the common grasses in Texas. It is definately a book that can be brought with you into the field in areas that you might not be familiar with all of the grasses.

We have a wildlife management program for our rural property. I purchased this book to help me identify the plants we have growing here. I am learning to tell the native grasses from imported varieties. This book has nice illustrations and good information. I might prefer photographs to help identify but these illustrations are pretty good. Unfortunately since I got the book we have had the worst drought ever in this area of Texas. I haven't been able to identify any grass because nothing is growing. What a disappointment.
However I like the book because it tells about each type of grass, where it prefers to grow, what type of wildlife eats it etc. It is easy to read not too scientific. When it does use scientific terms there is an illustration pointing out what part of the plant they are referring to which is helpful in learning to identify them. I'll have to decide later whether or not it is helpful in identifying the actual grasses when or if this drought ever ends.

Not for the novice,
This review is from: Common Texas Grasses: An Illustrated Guide (W. L. Moody Jr. Natural History Series) (Paperback)
This might be a 5 star for someone with scientific knowledge of grasses, but if you are a novice, wait until you have more experience before getting this book.
What I needed was a photo guide with clear pictures and descriptions in layman's terms.
