Editorial Reviews

Listen closely as Connie Robillard and Marcel Duclos speak the secrets of the sexual abuse that was kept from their families for more than half a century. Revealing and evocative this film takes you beyond these two lives, to the familiar life themes observed in your students, clients, family members or even your own story. As therapists they specialize in the treatment of trauma; they are no strangers to the residual effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Developmental Trauma and Domestic Violence. Amber Ward directs this feature-length documentary. It tells a recognizable story of healing, helping others, overcoming obstacles, and it invites the viewer to a compassionate understanding of the long-term work of unburdening and reintegrating the fragmented parts of self.

This is a companion film to the book Cultivating Hope With Abuse Survivors by Connie Robillard & Marcel A. Duclos. The book and film together provide a teaching packet for workshops, college classes, community education or individual use. The book contains experiential exercises for discussion, group work or for healing and recovery from abuse.

"Common Threads" is a beautiful, quiet documentary of the stories of two adults, who had been sexually abused as children and have healed from these traumas. Connie Robillard and Marcel Duclos are psychotherapists with many years experience of helping people recover from abuse. They weave their professional knowledge with the sensitive wisdom that comes from having gradually worked through the memories and consequences of having been molested and having no one to talk to about what had been happening. Through their stories, the viewer senses what children feel when they are forced into these violating situations: the confusion, shame, secrecy, and aloneness. Interspersed with their speaking are images of nature throughout the year and children playing on the beach; these scenes offer the hope that change, growth, and healing does emerge from these childhood traumas. "Common Threads" will be valuable to anyone concerned about child sexual abuse, including individuals seeking recovery and those who offer healing and safety.

I saw this film yesterday and I am buying a copy for a friend who plans to show it at a teachers conference. This film is for anyone who wants to understand child abuse from the inside out. Our country is faced with an epidemic which is the root of many social problems. The long term effects of child abuse are many including violence, substance abuse, mental illness and so much more that seems like individual social problems." This film shows us the roots of so much - worth the fifty minutes of viewing time. This film makes a great group discussion video.

Common Threads: Stories of Life after Trauma is absolutely riveting. To hear these two brave individuals open up and share their own personal stories of sexual abuse was truly inspirational for me in my own journey towards emotional healing. I would recommend this DVD to anyone who is battling or has battled any form of emotional trauma. This could also be a great resource for those who work with or are training to work with survivors of abuse.

THIS FILM IS A BRILLIANTLY MADE, THOUGHT-PROVOKING, MASTERPIECE. Although I am unable to relate to these accounts on a personal level, this film has brought to me a much deeper understanding of sexual abuse and the healing process of it's victims. The director's vision allows for someone like myself, rather uninformed on the subject matter, to really feel where the people depicted in the film are coming from. I highly recommend this documentary.

I watch a lot of this type of film because I am always looking for training materials for volunteers that work with abused kids. This was not one of my favorite, I was just board.
