good reference book for english or spanish speakers, January 8, 1999

As a teacher in a correctional facility, I am always looking for reference materials. I speak spanish but my fellow teachers don't. I purchased this book and took to my classroom. This book provides a wealth of material for individuals trying to communicate with spanish speakers. Students who are native spanish speakers trying to learn to speak english love this book. The book provides phonetic pronunciations of words & phrases for both languages. The size of the book and the organization make it very easy to use. We plan to order more to have in the classroom so each student can have one. Well done! Thanks for a terrific reference book.

Practical Reference for Both Nationalities, February 25, 2003

I purchased this book as my husband and I have a wonderful, Spanish lady who watches our daughter twice a week, but our Spanish is limited. This book does not cover everything, but is a wonderful starting point to words and conversations directly dealing with childcare, items around the house, cleaning, etc.
Today, while I was out doing errands I returned home and our child care provider pointed to the book and said: "Excellente!"
She asked where I purchased it because she would like one.
I'm sorry if some people find it "offensive," but to a lot of people like me and my childcare provider it is a practical means of communication. A lot of the phrases cover uncomfortable situations and I would never use them, but some people might.
This is a good book aimed to childcare providers or housekeepers and their employers. For the negative reviewer, don't take it personally it obviously helps a lot of us as it is in it's fourteenth printing. If you have something better than write a book of your own.

Not so great..., March 15, 2005
This review is from: How to Communicate with Your Spanish Speaking Help and Friends: A Complete Spanish/English Guide (Plastic Comb)
The title on the spine of this book is "the housekeeper's bible", and that is really what it is, despite claims to be more generally useful. If you are looking for a book to help communicate with a spanish speaking nanny, try "Bilingual Baby Care" instead. This would be useful in dealing with maids and folks in restaurants, but doesn't have the words necessary to do much else.
