Book Description

April 19, 2000
This book focuses on the importance of family conversation and the power of speech in providing both information and emotional support to the adopted child. Utilizing examples drawn from interview, case studies, and extensive correspondence, as well as from leading studies in the fields of psychology, sociology, and social work, Dr. Komar’s book gives a reassuring perspective on some of the most troubling issues of adoption.

Here is specific, proven advice on how to overcome common obstacles to parent-child communication.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This book offers much insight into the psyche of the adopted child. Psychoanalyst Komar notes that the greatest challenge of adoptive parents is to instill a positive self-image in their child. She forcefully argues that most people want to be ordinary and to blend into their environment. Thus, the usual attempt to attach special status to the adoptee is counter-productive. Her instructive comments on real-life situations, based on extensive interviewing of many adoptive families, provide guidelines and support. She is particularly reassuring when addressing the troubling questions regarding timing and techniques for imparting information about their past to adopted children and stresses the importance of recognizing a child's legitimate concerns about his or her origins. Komar's common-sense approach can help resolve many issues that confront the adoptive family.
