1.0 out of 5 stars Filled with prejudice and false sources, May 27, 1998
This review is from: Communist Collapse in Indonesia (Hardcover)
At first sight, this books delivers an in-depth review of the events in the night of September 30th and October 1st in Jakarta, Indonesia, known as the "Untung" or "Communist" coup. But, from the first chapter, this book is filled with false accusations. I suspect the author to have written this book from an anti-communist point of view. At present day (which is of course 29 years later) it is generally believed by experts that Pres. Suharto (with lots of help from the CIA) is the one personally responsible for both the fake "coup" and its counterpart, followed by 1 million deaths across Indonesia. The author expresses his hope for the future under the new government, but we can see today where it has led. If Mr. Brackman were a real expert on Indonesian affairs, he could have known even then that president Suharto would never fulfill the promises he made in 1965. I'm really sorry for Mr. Brackman, but I think this book is totally wrong (because of the wrong assumptions) or at least obsolete. If you want to know something about the 1965 coup, try to get hold of some work done by Professor Wertheim from Leiden, Netherlands for an objective review of the events.
