Good collection for the price but.., April 1, 2010
This review is from: The Communist Manifesto and Other Revolutionary Writings: Marx, Marat, Paine, Mao Tse-Tung, Gandhi and Others (Dover Thrift Editions) (Paperback)
This collection of various revolutionary writings collects texts from a variety of sources, from the Declaration of Independence of the USA, the Communist Manifesto of Marx and Engels, to famous Anarchist writings, reaching to modern day revolutionaries such as Che Guevara.
For the price, the collection is definitely worth the buy. However, I believe that the book suffers from an obvious problem, which should be addressed.
The variety of Ideological texts presented in this collection do not give a clear vision of any of their Ideologies. Each text is presented with a short introduction explaining the writer's origins or the historical conditions, but the introductions are mostly a paragraph long, and will not be of any real value to the reader, if no historical and ideological background reading has been done.
If you are buying this collection for the Communist Manifesto, I would suggest to buy a better edition, as there is such a variety of great editions with proper analysis in its history and the writers' motives (such as The Communist Manifesto: A Modern Edition). If you are buying this collection for a general understanding of ideas such as Liberalism, Anarchism, Communism etc, with no background reading, again, I would suggest that you start off from other books. However, if you are interested in the various texts found in this book, that are often of great historical importance, (such as the Declaration of Independence, or the Tennis Court Oath), this book would be proven very interesting and useful.
This edition is a Dover Thrift edition, which means that it is produced on low quality paper, hence the low price of the book.
