While community colleges give financially disadvantaged students a chance to open the door to education, simply walking through that door is not enough. Once there, many students feel completely alone on their journey. In Community College Success, Isa Adney shares secrets for connecting with others that helped her win a $110,000 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship. This is the first book to combine a youthful and accessible author with networking strategies specifically targeted to first generation and community college students. Community College Success gives historically under-represented students the strategic and motivational tools they need to be their own advocates and achieve their education and their dreams.

"A Community College Superstar!" - The White House Blog
Isa Adney is a national spokesperson for community college success, helping students to avoid student loan debt and break cycles of poverty by choosing community college, and ensuring that choice is a wise investment in their future by connecting with people who can catapult them to wealth, success, and a job that they actually enjoy.
Isa has been featured in publications such as The White House blog, USA Today, U.S. News, and The Lumina Foundation, FOX News Latino, and has been featured on television shows such as the ABC-affiliate CityLine, Urban Update, FOX 35 Good Day, and Orlando Matters. She also shares her success story and core strategies as a speaker to colleges and universities around the country, and shares free content to help students succeed and inspirational interviews with professionals (such as a New York Times journalist and an NBA Executive) on her blog www.communitycollegesuccess.com.
Isa Adney grew up in a lower middle class family and was the first in her family to graduate from college. Her grandparents moved from Puerto Rico to New York City because there weren't any jobs in Puerto Rico. They didn't speak a word of English when they came to the United States; her grandfather worked as a janitor for most of his life and her grandmother as a maid. Her father went to community college but never made it to a university. It took time for Adney to realize that students from wealthier families had a head start in life, but she learned that even though the playing field wasn't fair, it didn't mean she couldn't win.
Adney shares her personal story in her book COMMUNITY COLLEGE SUCCESS so historically underrepresented groups in higher education can learn how build a community to help them achieve an education and a life far beyond their dreams and family histories.
Adney graduated from Seminole Community College (now called Seminole State College of Florida), in May 2007, where she received a $110,000 Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. She transferred to Stetson University and graduated at the top of her class, receiving her B.A. in Communications in May 2009. She will graduate with an M.Ed in Training and Development from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in June 2012. She worked in Admissions and Student Life at Seminole State College for three years and is now a full-time author, speaker, and consultant.
Isa has spoken for organizations such as the National Council on Student Development (an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges), Phi Theta Kappa, The Hope CommUnity Center (an advocacy and support center for migrant farmworkers and their families), Pasco-Hernando Community College, Gulf Coast State College, Hillsborough Community College, Bristol Community College, The Florida College System Student Government Association, and one of the Nation's largest universities, The University of Central Florida.
Adney is married and lives in Orlando, Florida.

Isa Adney is helping break the negative stigma associated with students who go to a community college. I know from first hand experience that the tips Isa provides in this book are guaranteed to help any student on their path to professional and educational success. This book is a resource and success starts with getting involved and using your resources. Any student who wants to better themselves needs to read this book ASAP.
In addition to this book her blog and [...] page are helping students everywhere learn how to better themselves for their bright futures ahead of them.
Administrators need to read this as much as students do--it's amazing how quickly you can forget what life is like on the other side of the fence. I'm a librarian at a 4-year regional public university that has a large transfer population as well as a Ph.D Student in Higher Ed Administration. Community College Success really helped me put myself in transfer students' shoes in a way I hadn't before. This book is GREAT and I highly recommend it to anyone working in higher education.
This book is NOT only for community college students. EVERYONE could use some advice from this book including individuals who are in a bachelor's degree program, individuals going to graduate school, and graduate students. It gives networking advice that will last for a lifetime. Isa's story and the people in her novel she has quoted will intrigue you. Her book can even be used as a pep talk for people who have a degree and have been unemployed for awhile. It's a book worth its price and a book you'll keep for a lifetime! I highly recommend it!
