Book Description

Although designed primarily for student use, counselors can use the book, too, for one-on-one counseling and as a textbook for counseling workshops and classes.

This inexpensive book shows students how to plan and navigate their way through the maze of course and transfer requirements as well as the application and financial aid procedures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vital and highly educational, May 14, 2009
This review is from: Community College Transfer Guide (Perfect Paperback)
Community college is a bridge, but crossing that bridge is harder than one would think. "Community College Transfer Guide: What You Need to Know to Get Into a Four-Year College or University" is a guide for the community college student who is attempting to make that crossing. Success is very plausible with the right methods, and author Don Silver hopes to give readers what they need. Outlining the process step by step, "Community College Transfer Guide" is a guide that should be strongly considered for those in a community college, or even those entering a community college with intent to transfer later. "Community College Transfer Guide" is vital and highly educational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly One of Your Best Investment Opportunities, July 25, 2011

This review is from: Community College Transfer Guide (Perfect Paperback)

If you plan it correctly, a community college can save you a bundle of money the first two years of college, AND the last two years also.

At my community college the advisors spend their days helping students navigate the hurdles of college transitions. They regularly attend seminars led by chairpersons from every department at our local university. They send representatives to consult with a variety of 4-year universities. My school designs programs that work in cooperation with these universities. They sit in meetings with knowledgeable researchers who can help them predict the future job markets. They are in contact with each other throughout the day so they can discuss questions and arrive at the best answers. They work with advisors of 4 year institutions so transfers can be made as seamlessly as possible. Often advisors of receiving universities guide our students in their course selections. In short, our advisors really do know what they are doing and they are good at it.

Our Dean recently purchased a copy of this book for every advisor. That should tell you something. Even though they spend their lives working in this area, they can learn something valuable to the college from its pages. This book is inexpensive, usually easy to read, and packed with valuable data that will help you gain the most from your college experience. It doesn't cover everything. Everything it covers can't be explained simply. Everything in the book doesn't apply to every location. It will not replace advisors. It is, nevertheless, a powerhouse of useful information for not much money. If you will carefully read this book, and work with your advisor, it may save you many times its cost. You may just find that this book is one of your best financial investments.
