This review is from: Community, Culture, and Economic Development (Suny Series, Democracy in American Politics) (Paperback)
Meredith Ramsay's lengthy and tenacious field research uncovered levels of southern culture that a shorter stay would not have revealed. Her sensitive questions and willingness to think outside of her classroom training yielded a masterful understanding of her subjects and their nearly intractable economic problems. Yet she wove a respect for their ways and a measure of hope for their communities into all her chapters. Ramsay's writing style is also top-notch: readily accessible to a layperson and riveting. Of all the books that were assigned in my economic development courses, Ramsay's book is the only one that I read a second time for the pure pleasure of it.
