This is a good book for those interested learning the the community oriented policing philosophy. The author covers the history through current practices curently being used in progressive cities in the US. The author even covers how this phiosophy is being implemented in foreign countries, such as New Zealand. There are suggestions and ideas to begin the transition from a reactionary police force to a community oriented department.

The author covers the concept of "direct patrol' and how this method can be used to address citizen complaints about small crimes which impact livabity in neighborhoods. He offers ways to work with communities that don't require additional money or personnel.

I would recommned this book to college/universities who have criminal justice programs or for police administrators desiring to learn about the community oriented philosophy.

Community-Oriented Policing: A Systemic Approach to Policing (4th Edition). I bought this as a required text for a recent police promotional exam. AWFUL! I am certain the author did not generate an original thought throughout the entire text. Rather, it is a regurgitation of other works in the field of study. The information is so dated, it has become irrelevant. The most recent edition includes few updates and the ones that are included are a waste of time. Sincerely, as a 15-year-veteran police officer with a masters degree it is my opinion that unless you are required to read this text as I was, you should not waste your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for instuction of College students learning the in's and outs of COP, October 31, 2011
I have used this book as a textbook for the course Community Oriented Policing. I have found it very useful for the students who are being introduced to the Criminal Justice System, as well as being written at a level which they can understand. As the instructor, I am able to take this material as a foundation, then build on it as you would expect of a thirty-six year veteran of policing and a college level instructor. As in any bachelor level class, the instructor must give more than just the text, or there is no reason to attend class.
