Wow! Some of these reviews are harsh. I speak Mandarin and English, I took high school Spanish for a year, I understand about a word here or there from her songs.

That being said, I know good music when I hear it. For an artist to make me like to her Spanish album is certainly no easy feat. No, I can't tell if her spanish is strained or unnatural sounding, but I can tell tell what shes singing sounds good and the music and beats are not bad either. I can't tell if the contents of her lyrics are worthy of a grammy, but from the lyrical translations I found, they don't seem that bad. Nearly all the songs on this album are worth listening to as well (definitely a rarity these days).

Anyway, I just had to write this review. Sometimes music just sounds good. Maybe it's not 5 star perfect, but sorry, I just had to give 5 stars for those of who giving 1 stars as if this album is trash.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new side of J.Lo's music, May 1, 2007
This review is from: Como Ama Una Mujer (Audio CD)
I bought this album precisely for the reason many other reviewers have panned it. No, it's not a rehashing of "Waiting for Tonight" or "If You Had My Love." Yes, most of the songs are ballads. So what? It's called TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT. I personally do not need to be barraged with more J.Lo. dance cuts. The title of the album is "How a Woman Loves" not "How a Woman Dances" and this is for good reason. "Tú," "Apresúrte," "Amarte es Todo" and "Adiós" are my favorite songs not only for their catchy melodies, but because Lopez has allowed her voice to be front-and-center more than ever before. Sure, the canned audience in "Adiós" is a little bit cheesy, but the song is intended to evoke a sense of yearning and camaraderie so it actually fits within the context of the song.
Most pop artists are damned if they do and damned if they don't -- people either hate them for doing the same thing over and over or hate them for trying something new. It's always better to err on the side of innovation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great new album!, May 6, 2007

Ariel Tyler (Washington, D.C.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Como Ama Una Mujer (Audio CD)
This is a beautiful album where J.Lo shows the strength of her vocals and continues to show us her Latin sultriness with seductive rhythm and lyrics. Her words reflect depth, passion and power. I am frankly shocked by the other reviews that say this album is not "true J.Lo" and she's "trying to be a serious artist". My opinion is those reviews demonstrate the mental barriers in the mind of the reviewer and not of J.Lo.

I don't understand Spanish to any significant degree but I can appreciate the awesome music and the power behind her words. Her albums have never had the fluffy nothingness of Gwen , Britney, or Fergie.. those I consider "entertainers". Lopez has always musically been an artist to me (now the movies is another discussion... ). The one criticism I have is that the album is a little ballad heavy however she has enough up-beat songs in there that I don't get bored and I think the album flows nicely. However it is not a dance the whole way through album by any means. Just good, beautiful music.

A life's ambition realised? Or a cynical throw of the loaded Latin dice to consolidate the expansion of the J-Lo brand?
Acknowledged as the most influential Hispanic artist of our time, it is perhaps surprising it took so long for Jenny to show us the hacienda.
The single 'Que Hiciste' is a rump shaking dancefloor filler, but unrepresentative of what is an essentially easy, if classy, listening exercise. It does prove conclusively that Lopez can sing, and in relation to her acting career is definitely more "Out Of Sight" than "Gigli".
Her first album in Spanish includes ballads about pain and deliverance, but is often overproduced ( four tracks feature the strings of the London Symphony Orchestra ) and whiffs of the forgettably exotic.
The title track (which means "How a Woman Loves") might wow the diners on a Caribbean cruise and the single "Que Hiciste" is at least a lively moment among the tepid balladry, too often interrupted with clumsy guitar solos.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Como Ama Una Mujer (Audio CD)
This Jennifer Lopez album proves that the girl actually CAN sing...and well! It's a great classic spanish album full of beautiful spanish songs. Lyrically, it's poignant and passionate. Several tracks stand out- Sola, Porque Te Marchas, and Apresurate are just a few of my favorites. Overall, a solid effort!

If you love passionate, spanish love songs, you should definitely pick this up!

5.0 out of 5 stars The R E A L review (with very minimal bias), March 28, 2007
This review is from: Como Ama Una Mujer (Audio CD)
I am confused when people come on Amazon.com to write a review, I would assume that they they would be reviewing the book, album, or product rather than making personal attacks or personal praises....but that doesn't seem like the case when it comes to Jennifer Lopez, let alone this beautiful album.

I had the album a month before it's official release and officially bought my copy yesterday. This is the best album of her career thus far in terms of vocals and lyrics. She's been a good pop artist up until this point. With Como Ama una Mujer, Miss Lopez has made the transformation from pop fluff diva to mature musical artist -- and what better way to do it than through a Spanish album, which she's always wanted to do. She's always made it clear to her record label upon first album that Spanish music was her intent but they made it clear that she should first make an English album, followed by four other English albums. Upon hearing her Spanish demos, I can say she sounded fine but upon comparing with this album, she sounds way better. I am glad it took Lopez enough experiences about love in order for her to use her own money to finance the album herself. (PS - Her execs heard the album and decided to help market her 2 yr passion project).

Here is a track by track review of the album:

Qué Hiciste - Excellent first single delivering strong vocals and intense lyrics over a Latin flavored rock tinged production. This is one of the album's overall highlights. This is a great song for her to perform to.

Me Haces Falta - Beautiful opening, great chorus and overall contributes to the album's strong opening. The 2nd highlight of the album.

Como Ama Una Mujer - Great ballad. What makes this song work well is Lopez's voice. I have never heard her sound so raw, crisp and go so high in octave than ever before. This is one of the song's that puts the rumour to rest of her not being able to sing. There are no background singers, just Lopez's voice, great lyrics, and soft yet dramatic production to showcase the heart of the album's meaning -- how a woman loves -- the main theme of the album makes it clear with a beautiful ballad like this.

Te Voy A Querer - This is a hot song! Because of the instruments and her voice, it sounds like it would be a great song for a live performance. I could see this being a huge summer hit if they were to release it and market it either this year or next year spring/summer. Another album highlight.

Por Que Te Marchas - One of the worthy leftovers from "Rebirth" but created with Spanish lyrics. I like the Spanish version more than the English version. With lush production, passion, and sadness, it's great to hear Jennifer sing something everyone can relate to.

Por Arriesgarnos - Besides No Me Ames, this is the BEST duet Marc and Jennifer have ever done. Marc only sings with her on the chorus but EVERYTHING from the opening to the closing of this midtempo love song could get no better. It's so beautiful and upon first listen, it touched me deep in my heart that I feel as though I have to hear this song played at my wedding (and I'm only 21, I don't intend on getting married until almost 30).

Tu- My favorite track on the whole album. It sounds like a feel of 80s Italian pop as someone else mentioned. I LOVE THIS SONG. It's one of the best ballads I've heard since the 90s from any artist. Lopez sounds AMAZING vocally, the production is PERFECT, and the lyrics are truly beautiful without being cheesy. One of the best highlights of the album. The opening is soft before exploding into the lush chorus with extended vocals by Lopez herself. She continues the theme of having no backup singers, with the exception to the fast paced songs like the first 2 and the midtempo ballad she does with M.Anthony.

Amarte Es Todo - Another of my favorite songs. It's beautiful without being cheesy and here is where Lopez delivers her most powerful and intense high octave range vocals compared to any of the other ballads. All of them sound great, but with a title translated as "love is everything," it's worthy to make clear that her vocals truly shine her. I hear she's going to be on American Idol next month. This would be the song for her to perform on a show like that.

Apresurate - I like this song a lot, especially when I first got the album. It has great lyrics and makes you feel good.

Sola - This song has an interesting feel to it - reminds me of an ambient electro midtempo ballad.

Adios - Excellent way to close such a beautiful album. It sounds live with the audience joining in to sing and applauses being given to Lopez.

There are no filler tracks on this album. 11 beautiful song ranging from tough latin rock to soft passionate ballads reflecting on the title of How a Woman Loves. Lopez has never sounded so good. As passionate as she seems about this album and from all the buzz and interviews, it has lived up to its expectations in comparison to any musical work she has ever created. This album is worth 5 stars.

I find it tacky when the reviews attack her past personal life or discuss anything unrelated to 'Como Ama una Mujer. REVIEW THE ALBUM FROM AN HONEST LISTEN RATHER THAN POSTING THESE SAME LAME COMMENTS ABOUT HOW IT SUCKS.

For the record, her Spanish is FINE on this album. I can't say the same for her live interviews; she still manages to stumble here and there, but there have been noticeable improvements. I haven't bought an album in months, and purchasing this album was a satisfied purchase because again, I loved every track.

If she were to have added 3 or 4 more uptempo tracks, then this would be a well rounded contempoary spanish album but instead she does fine relating to her overall theme of spanish ballads to showcase how a woman loves -- no one better to do it then Lopez herself, who is well known for her past public love interests/ relationships.

Overall, the album is perfect with minimal flaws. Lopez has matured in her musical artistianship on many levels. Her lyrical and vocal maturity gives strong hope as to which direction she will take her future musical projects both in Spanish (and English) and how she has the potential to be one of music's greatest pop bilingual icons if she continues on this road of evolving musical personal and professional development.

When deciding to buy this album, you should buy it because it's great contempoary spanish music NOT because she is Puerto Rican or not buy it because of any stupid biases you've had in the past in regards to Lopez. Even for those that do not speak Spanish; the beauty of this album is evident. Love is a universal theme in all languages.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM!, April 5, 2007
By
This review is from: Como Ama Una Mujer (Audio CD)
Going into this album, I wasn't sure what to expect. I mean we've gotten songs like Waiting For Tonight, all the way down to Jenny From The Block. And No Me Ames all the way down to Escapemonos. Jennifer is a multi-genre artist. She could do POP/DANCE/R&B and with great success. (Check her Chart History). Anyway, I was very curious to hear this album so I pre ordered it. I didn't know WHAT sound this album would have. But I was willing to take a chance on it.

Let me begin by saying WOW. I CANNOT BELIEVE this album came from Jennifer Lopez. This is an album that I Loved from start to finish. ALTHOUGH I could have done without adios. I was shocked to hear such a smooth album. The lyrics were written to PEREFECTION and Marc's back up vocals were the icing on the cake as far as I was concerned.

If you're a fan of Jennifer's other music, then you'd probably dislike this album. But if you love GREAT LYRICS, Smooth Vocals, and the wonderfully creative sound of Latin Music, this album is for you.

I Applaud Jennifer Lopez for taking a risk and not trying to do what's "HOT" at the moment, but doing a smooth ballad filled album that has surely has quenched my thirst. As a fellow Puerto Rican, she has SURELY made me proud. Keep taking Chances Jennifer.. I am proud of you. Que Dios Te Bendiga.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenally Put Together- Jennifer Lopez Shines!!!!, April 3, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Como Ama Una Mujer (Audio CD)
Como Ama Una Mujer is an amazing piece of work, if Laura Branigan had ever recorded a spanish album, i would put my bets on it, that this is how it would sound like. You could really feel the growth in Jennifer Lopez's voice and the maturity in the lyrics! i really won't be surprised if thi album becomes a classic.

1.Que Hiciste- A very strong opening to the album, you can actually feel the wrath in her voice, especially when you'r reading the lyrics and looking at that amazingly beautiful picture of hers right next to it. and at the same time your wondering: how is it that such a beauty could be pouring out her heart with so much sorrow and pain! 10/10

2.Me Haces Falta-This could easily become anyone's favorite song, the guitars are put together phenomenally. I am COMPLETLY in LOVE with this song because of lyrics and the beat! This song should be a single. 10/10

3.Como Ama Una Mujer-I could really see Latin superstar Lucero singing this song back in her days. it has this 90's Spanish epic ballad feel to it. 10/10

4.Te Voy A Querer-a semi-upbeat song. i really like how they used accordions to creat this stong mysterious sound, and the chorus is quite catchy. 9/10

5.Porque Te Marchas-I love both the English and Spanish versions of this song. Its just such a powerful and moving track. 10/10

6.Por Arriesgarnos- when you first hear Jennifer sing, it sounds like something you hear in a fairy-tale. It's quite touching 9/10

7.Tu- WOW!! Tu is such an AMAZING love song, you can feel the conviction in her voice with every word she sings. everytime i listen to this song it sends shivers down my spine! The vocals are amazing! 10/10

8.Amarte Es Todo- a smooth ballad. 9/10

9.Apresurate-I really like this song, it has a good vibe to it. 9.5/10

10.Sola- This is such a haunting song. it sounds like she doesn't give a damn about anything, and like she's at the brink of a breakdown. i love when se sings "i esta vez disparaste a matar" and then goes into the chorus. it just sounds so convoluted! 10/10

11.Adios-Jennifer could have not picked a better song to end this gorgously crafted masterpiece. Her vocals and the choir really give it "goodbye" sort of feeling, especially when she sings, "adios me voy adios/ i no me dejas ni tan solo una esperanza/ adios amor adios.10/10

Overall Como Ama Una Mujer is A rougly enjoyable album for everyone.
It's definatley worth every dollar!
