Editorial Reviews

From the Label
These songs have all been remastered from premium quality sources with the exception of four tracks within the album "For the Young at Heart" which were remastered from a good quality stereo vinyl source. All other tracks within that album were remastered from first generation original masters.

Product Description
Two of Perry's popular "swing" albums, albeit very different one from the other, "Como Swings" and "For the Young at Heart" were recorded back to back at RCA's Webster Hall, New York City, the first in 1959 and the other in 1960, representing two different views of a swinging Como. "Como Swings" was produced by Charles Grean and Lee Schapiro whereas "For the Young at Heart" was the first of five albums produced for Perry by the legendary team of Hugo and Luigi. Both albums are charming and show Perry Como in a very different light from his traditional low-key persona. A highlight of "Como Swings" is a non-credited duet with Como's choral director Ray Charles within the song "To Know You (Is To Love You)".

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatile, June 17, 2001
By N. Lacey (Renton, WA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This shows the versatility this man had. One usually thinks of him as a crooner of love songs, but there seemed to be nothing the man couldn't sing and sing beautifully. He will always be a star and this shows it. N. Lacey

5.0 out of 5 stars Como really swings and has a really young at heart approach!, January 24, 2006
Perry Como, was one of the finest singers of the 20th century and of all time. His beautiful voice, wonderful personality and handsome looks endeared him to millions Worldwide!

On this 2 on 1 CD, we see to superb albums from the late 50's - early 60's, showcasing two artistic and very versatile aspects of Perry's beautiful voice.

We start off with an album of swinging tracks to get you going, called 'Como Swings' with a beautifully smooth controlled rendering of each track included. With everything from Perry's sophisticated and very cool version of '(Get your kicks on) Route 66' to his wonderfully smooth voice spreading over 'Mood indigo'.

The second album included within this CD is 'For the young at heart'. This album is full of songs that are perfectly suited, not only to Perry's voice, but to his overall outlook and personality. Listen to Perry's version of 'Young at heart', which he undoubtedly makes his own! The song is generally associated with Frank Sinatra, but I would say Perry's version is much more definitive as it is expressed within the playfulness of Perry's phrasing and the arrangement of the song. Perry also sings 'Hello young lovers', which has become a classic in the history of Como. Perry actually recorded this song originally back in the early 1950's, but re-recorded it for this album in the early 1960's. 'Hello young lovers' became a song Perry used for the opening of many of his shows live performances, along with 'I've got you under my skin', also included within this CD (on the 'Como Swings' album)

This CD is a must have for Perry Como fans and all other music fans as well!

Well worth adding to your collection. As with many of the CD's from the 'Collectables' range, sound is not fantastic and some songs sound better than others!

However, I can give this CD the full 5 stars, just because of Perry Como, who despite poor - fair mastering within the CD can still be heard, displaying his beautiful vocals and charm! - WHICH SHINE THROUGH WITH FLYING RESULTS!

If you haven't listened to these albums before, I suggest you do so as soon as possible!

Well worth the money! Like all of Como's work. It is however a shame that the engineers don't put in the amount of effort into re-mastering these wonderful songs, as Perry did into recording them!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine by me, May 29, 2001
By A Customer
I just listened to this album today, and found the sound and songs OK for my ears. The instruments on the "swinging" portion are strong, but I feel that was the intent, and I do not feel Perry's voice is drowned out. One major reason I got the album was I wanted to hear how Perry handled 50s hits like "Too Young" and "Young Love"--very well in my book! (Though the thought that Tab Hunter and Perry both recorded "Young Love" does cause a little whiplash.) By the way, "Young Love" was one of the four songs not taken from master tapes, but I could discern very little degradation of quality on this or the other ones. A good album for Como lovers.
