Somewhat incomplete,
This review is from: CompTIA Network+ Certification Study Guide, Fourth Edition (Certification Press) (Paperback)
While this is an informative book, especially concerning Microsoft networking utilities and features, there were definitely some areas on the Network+ 2009 N10-004 test (just took it today, and passed, but not as well as I would have liked) that were not well covered in this book. The areas that could definitely use more attention were CIDR-based sub-netting and physical facility equipment and tools. There was a lot of emphasis on troubleshooting scenarios as well. While the book (content/quizzes/test) focuses many questions around Microsoft tools/utilities, I experienced next to no Microsoft-centric questions on the actual test. (The test is actually very vendor neutral)
I realize it is not easy to create a test prep book like this, and I appreciate authors like Glen providing these resources. But at the same time, it is hard for any book to provide all possible knowledge needed for a test like this.

I'm using the book to facilitate a group that is studying for the certification exam. The book is well written and easy to understand. However, there is a lot of detail in the book that is a challenge for those indviduals who do not have a lot of networking experience to ingest. The self-test questions are very helpful, especially since explanations are provided that identify why the wrong answers are wrong and correct answers are correct. The "exam watch" hints are also a benefit, as they add emphasis to concepts that are important to know for the sake of passing the exam. Overall, it is a good study aid for the Network + certification.

Firstly. I would like to thank and appraciate the author for this useful book. I am a master degree graduate from london in computer networking security. Although the most of the topics that are included in this book i did cover already in my study,I found the way of its presentation via this book interesting and attractive.
Many difficult titles could be covered in well done way. I also was able to obtain a new knowladge and information. Lastly. I would recommend any one who is interested in computer and its related fields such as networking and security to read this book. Best wishs Isam

Used only this book for studying and passed on the first try. Great reading, and I am the type that hates reading books. The only thing i wish was that the practice exam on the CDROM had more questions and chose them at random.

75%,

This book is not on the latest 2009 CompTIA recommended reading list for a reason. It will give you about 75% of what you need to pass, which is just enough to fail the Network+ exam. It also provides you with too much material that is not even touched upon on the exam. I had to get Mike Meyer's "All In One" Network+ book after I got a 67% on the online practice exam to fill the holes. Still it wasn't enough, so I purchased additional questions from UCertify, which was extremely helpful and did the trick. Don't make my mistake; go to the CompTIA website find out what the latest recommended self-study material is.

The book is good and well written. This is a good book for the exam and explains the concepts well, but you will need another such as the CompTia Sybex book. The Sybex book has diagrams that you will need and should be copied and memorized, such as the speeds of all fiber cables and what size laser lights pass through each different fiber cable.

So-So text misrepresents contents,
This review is from: CompTIA Network+ Certification Study Guide, Fourth Edition (Certification Press) (Paperback)
Text is So-So. General coverage that "sort of" maps to Comptia network+. Quickie book designed for quick cash for publisher. Doubt if author made much. Main complaint is that the text claims that the CD offer "bonus master exam" thorough proprietary software and online companion. Nope! Not happening there! Buy it used for under $10 and it is OK. Anything over that and you can find better deals with a better publisher than McGraw Hill.

So far I've read a few chapters of the book and it is easy to read and understand. I will see how effective it is when I go to take the test.

I found that this book was well written, goes in depth to the point needed for the CompTIA Network+ certification and is very easy to get through. Not only was it a good read, but it was essential to my passing of the CompTIA Network+ exam. I recommend this book. Thanks Glen!

Waste of time if your new to networking,

First off I DO like the way the book is written, it keeps your interest better than other, much drier versions of network+ study guides. Having said that, I do not like the labs for this book and have found they have held me back more than helped. The author fully expects you to know Server inside and out and doesn't properly explain the steps of configuring settings. (example straight from lab text "Install IIS with ASP and use the classroom web site files from CD-ROM") Okay, WHAT classroom? what CD-ROM? If I didn't already know what IIS and ASP was, then I would be completely lost at the FIRST step. I find it pretty ridiculous that the author didn't put more time into these labs and just assumes the readers' knowledge of Server/Red Hat, etc. That completely defeats the purpose of writing a book like this! So in other words, if you're new to networking, don't waste your time with this book. Start with something like a Windows Server 2003 book and go from there.
