This book should only be used in conjunction with another text while studying for the Net+, if at all. I bought this as my main study guide, trusting the good reputation of Exam Cram, as most of their books are generally pretty solid. I read through this book, did the practice questions, and also ran through the test simulator (the CD does show up in only a couple of days if it isn't included). The day before I originally planned on taking the test I spent part of a day at Barnes and Noble and essentially used it as a library in order to get a different perspective on the material. I sat down with a few books and would go through their review questions, making note of any areas where I felt I struggled, and then reading the portion of the text that covered that particular subject. I am incredibly thankful that I did this because it lead to the discovery that the Exam Cram text had several important topics that were either left out completely or barely covered. I ended up buying a different book and spending an extra week studying it, and was amazed how it covered things that weren't even in the Exam Cram book, yet were absolutely on the Net+ exam. The reviews mentioning typos and poor editing are true as well, by the way. All in all, this book is only useful if you have a different book to use as your main study guide. In other words, if you want just one book that will adequately prepare you for the Net+ exam, this one is an absolute waste of money.

Lots of Typos and flat out errors,
By Stephen Holbert "theoneomicron" (north las vegas, Nevada United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: CompTIA Network+ N10-004 Exam Cram (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
This book was almost good. but there are just too many mistakes. Lots and lots of typos, And I mean big ones that should have gotten caught. I have read the book twice now and the second time through I have found many more subtle errors. You will read a set of technical specifications and then on the next page a chart or graph will contradict the previously read material. You are now left with deciding which is right, and that's only if you notice it. Many mistakes are obvious some are not and others are just very confusing and make you scratch you head for a few minutes trying to figure out what they mean. The CD that comes with it is worthless. It has 30 questions, and when you go to buy more they want $109.00 for 200 more questions. wow. I found 300 practice questions from simulation exams for $27.00. So In short I would recommend one of the other books that have come out for network+ 2009 N10-1004 exam even though I haven't read them. Mike meyers just came out with one that has 200 practice questions on CD I don't know if its good But it can't be worse that this book.

Excellent Prep for CompTIA Network + Exam,
By
This review is from: CompTIA Network+ N10-004 Exam Cram (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
I had a couple books at work to study for the exam and this one was, by far, the easiest to follow and study. I, also, found the exam tips and self-test questions very helpful.
I don't know why people complain about the book...I found it easy to read and very logical. I have 20+ years experience with computers but only 2 with networks and the book assumes you are not brand-new in the network world. If you are, go to hardware stores and look over all the cables, routers, switches, and connectors you can and find a network expert and have them mentor you on difficult topics. (Like the OSI layers, router protocols, ports, etc.) My only recommendations for future editions would be to add more on subnetting as the book does a poor job explaining it, imho. I studied this book, cover to cover, a couple of times before taking the test and I scored an 865 on the COMPTIA Network + on the first try. (Lots of self-quizes on the WWW, go get some of those before you take the test and re-study weak areas.)

How did this make it through the editor?,
This review is from: CompTIA Network+ N10-004 Exam Cram (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
The book's material is "OK" and I passed the test with an 845 out of 900 score using this book as my only study material. Don't attempt that feat if you're new to computer networking.
That said, how did this book's contents make it through whatever editing process is in place!? HUGE errors like half sentences and things that make you say "Dubya Tee Eff"?

The more I read this book the more I feel absolutely let down. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the exam guidelines for the Network+ exam, but overall the book seems to lack focus and is full of outright factual errors. It's really scary at time to see some of the errors in this book that made it past the editor. On top of that unlike other Que Exam Cram books that come with a test engine CD this book does not. You can go to their website and order one, but who knows when that will actually show up (mine won't be here in time for the exam). Overall, this book is missing an enormous amount of content that anyone new to networking absolutely must have, and just has too many errors to be forgiven. Hopefully they can revise the book as time goes on because the Exam Cram line is a solid line, but this book is lacking.

Book is well written, though it does cover some material not necessary for the exam. It does highlight and shift focus to the required parts as well as lists tips for remembering specific aspects of the exam.
Overall, good purchase and would recommend it. For the most part, an easy read.

There are many confusing aspects to this book. First of all, the cover of my copy is different from the cover shown here on Amazon.com. In all other respects the copies appear to be identical, even including the printing and ISBN numbers. What happened? Next, as many others have pointed out, the CD is rubbish. There is no acceptible excuse for this, period. I've tried to contact everyone connected - Que Publishing, Pearson Education, CompTIA - but nobody wants to handle this hot potato. Lots of finger pointing and ignorance here. While the author (in my opinion) does a great job with the material, the editors, printers, and people who put together the CD all failed. With unemployment so high, how do people like this keep their jobs?

Network+ N10-004 Exam Cram 3rd edition,

This is an excellent resources for the Network+ N10-004 test. I only found a few errors in the book, but the CD was horrible. The book cover shows the CD contains 200 questions, but there were only 30. The CD .exe file would not work on 3 different computers, I had to manually load the file. This is not the only study guide I used: Todd Lammles Network+ Certification Kit with 95% of the same info as the exam cram; Lammle spends 2 chapters covering Subnets which were NOT on my Network+ test but were on my CCNA test. I also used exam cram from N10-002: this was used just for extra questions. Can you only use the Exam Cram 3rd edition for your test? I would say yes, but extra questions from different resources would help. I passed 890/900

Book cover says CD has more than 200 practice questions. Not! There are 30 MeasureUp which I already have access to. I got this mostly just for the questions on CD. Book is very readable though.
