This is an excellent study guide for the Security+ exam. The sample questions on the CD are almost exactly what is on the real exam, in fact I actually found one question that was identical verbatim to what was on the CD. I think going through the chapter exams and reading on the subjects you miss questions on is the best way to study for the Security+ which is a fairly tough exam. This is the only resource I used and I got an 885/900. You will not be disappointed with this book and especially not with the CD which is worth the price by itself thanks to its excellent sample tests.

This is my second Sybex guide (first was a iNet+ book from Sybex) and one of the things that impresses me with these books is how I've noticed the questions more closely match the questions on the final CompTIA test more than any other study books I've read! Even more so than PrepLogic Practice exams (which is somewhat disappointing considering what they cost...) This book in particular is a very good read and includes a CD with hundreds of additional testing questions on it. There are mini-tests at the end of every chapter as well as a fairly detailed glossary.

Really good book fo your Security+ exams.I recommend this book
as your first study guide for the exams as it explains
the topics covered in the exams really simple and to the
point.
As a matter of personal opinion i really think that
you would also supplement with the Syngress(2nd Edition) book also.
It gives you more details in some subjects.Overall this two books is gonna cover you for the exams and i give this book a 4/5 rating!

I found this textbook to be comprehensive and accurate in the information it conveys. It was relatively easy to read and put forth the material in such a manner as not to bore one to death!

I passed the exam with an 803 and even saw two questions that were word-for-word out of this text. I highly recommend this textbook as the predominant reference, along with another cross-reference just for completeness.

Good reading, but the practice questions could be better. Also leaves out a few categories that I had to brush up on from other sources, but that's to be expected with just about any single book.

*******review update******* This product is outdated since the exam was updated in 2007 and this book is based on the 2005 exam

Of the books I obtained to ensure passing of the Security+ exam, Sybex's CompTIA Security+ is one of the best. The book provides enough detail on each of the Security+ Exam objectives to give a solid understanding. Like other Sybex books, it is a hard read being the subject matter is presented in an academic format. The other books I read were the Security+ Guide to Network Security by Thompson Course Technology, and the Exam Cram guide. The Thompson Course Technology book was good for instructional material with enough exercises to make it interesting, but is worthless in as guide to pass the exam... unless you have access to the Instructor's guide and the instructor's test builder. If you intend to pass the Security+ exam on the first try, the Sybex book AND the Exam Cram guide (with flash cards) is your best option.

I failed to notice that this was a years-outdated text. I was actually looking for the SY0-301 book, not this SY0-101 book. Original publication date is nearly six years ago. While the information contained within isn't completely useless, it's not a terribly useful resource for the current exam.

I used this book along with books with from Syngress (Security + Study Guide and DVD Training System), McGraw-Hill (Security+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide), and Que ((The Ultimate Security+ Certification Exam Cram 2 Study Kit (Exam SYO-101) (Exam Cram 2)) and passed the exam with a score of 780. The bottom line is that the more practice questions you are exposed to, the better off you are going to be.
