Editorial Reviews

Review

One of the amazing distinctives of the Bible is its unity. It is in reality a book containing many books, written over centuries by all kinds of people—shepherds and kings, priests and prophets—yet it paints one big, remarkably clear picture. This cohesiveness is what makes the Bible unique.

The NIV Compact Bible Commentary explains the Bible book by book. But unlike other commentaries, it begins with the larger context—the Bible as a whole—then shows you how all its books fit into the grand picture. Instead of a verse-by-verse exposition, it unlocks the meanings of larger sections of Scripture. You’ll see how key themes, concepts, and even specific terms from earlier books of the Bible are echoed and expanded on in later books.

If you’re serious about studying the Bible, if you need a resource to prepare a Bible lesson, or if you simply want to know the Bible better, this is one commentary you should have, even if you already own several. Written by respected theologian John Sailhamer, its insights offer valuable, wide-angle perspectives on the central messages of Scripture, and its compact size makes it perfect for school, church, the workplace, and as a travel companion -- Publisher

From the Publisher

Presenting the NIV Compact Series in softcover. Smart. Convenient. Keep the whole set within reach on your desktop. Grab a volume or two volumes and take them with you anywhere. Each NIV Compact book packs a lot of information in a small package--one that fits where other books won't and travels light when larger volumes tip the scales. And the price is as compact as the size--but don't let the modest cost fool you. There's a lot of knowledge here, condensed to provide the most salient information in an efficient format. For a hand-sized reference library that does more than scratch the surface, this 4-volume series is the route to take: big on insight, small in size, and easy on the pocketbook. Now in softcover, the NIV Compact Series includes: ? NIV Compact Bible Commentary--Begins with the larger context--the Bible as a whole--then shows how all its books fit into the grand picture. It offers valuable, wide-angle perspectives on the central messages of Scripture ? NIV Compact Nave's Topical Bible-- Based on the NIV Nave's Topical Bible, this compact edition omits biblical text while retaining topical muscle. And like its full-sized counterpart, it improves on the original, KJV-based edition by adding more than 500 headings, 2,000 subtopics, and 1,300 cross-references. ? NIV Compact Concordance-- This streamlined adaptation of the award-winning NIV Exhaustive Concordance provides more than 50,000 references and over 2,000 exhaustive entries for practical and significant Bible study. ? NIV Compact Dictionary of the Bible-- This unique volume is actually three books in one: a dictionary for easy-to-find, practical information on thousands of topics; a topical index for detailed study of nearly 150 larger topics; and a survey providing an introductory overview of the Bible, biblical history, and biblical culture

5.0 out of 5 stars Significant Information From A Small Book, August 17, 2000
By
Dean G. Richard Lobs III (Orlando, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NIV Compact Bible Commentary (Paperback)
This is a commentary to tuck into your brief case and carry about with you. The NIV Compact Bible Commentary the best short commentary I have ever used.

Though I give it five stars, Sailhammer's commentary is not even. His treatment of the Torah is the highwater mark of the book. The New Testament by contrast seems hurried and not as full as his treatment of the Hebrew Scriptures. This should be no surprise given his speciality in the Hebrew Scriptures.

I have given away a number of copies to people who have an interest in biblical interpretation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reader/Reference, August 2, 2005
By
This review is from: NIV Compact Bible Commentary (Paperback)
Sailhamer provides concise, sound commentary on the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. My husband and I have read this book for enjoyment as well as used it as a reference for specific passages. We strongly recommend this book to any new Christian reading through the Scriptures for the first time as well as the well-read Bible student.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great tool for the new Bible reader, February 22, 2002

This review is from: NIV Compact Bible Commentary (Paperback)
As a new Bible reader and studier, I have found this book to be very worthwhile for getting an overview of Biblical material. It is easy to get lost while reading a book of the Bible (for us newbies, anyway!), and Sailhamer's book shows the reader the Big Picture so that it is easy to keep on track. There are more in-depth commentaries, but if you are new at this, I recommend this book. I gave it four stars because I think it could be a BIT more detailed.
