This book helped me a great deal with my French studies. Everytime I find a French word I don't understand, I never worry because I always know it's in this dictionary. I've never found such a helpful dictionary before!

i needed a specific type of french dictionary with IPA (international phonetic alphabet). It was 5 cents i figured it could probably be old and or slightly worn. It was, i put clear scotch tape on one side of the binding. it smells fine, no stains, all the pages, no marks, just a little ware. I don't mind. it fit what i needed and i am very happy.

This is the most complete and useful French dictionary available in paperback. Oxford has done us a huge service by introducing the "Compact" size. The dictionary is manageable and uses extraordinarily clear typeface and layout, while covering more words than its competitors--in greater depth, too! I only wish Oxford would introduce "Compact" versions of its other dictionaries--since its most thorough paperback dictionaries for other languages (the "pocket" series = h/c "desk") are wimpy and fall short of such competition as the Webster's New World series. But not in French. This is the best paperback dictionary available, extremely modern and up-to-date...and, yes, I *have* looked at them all!

P.S. The reviewer who writes, "it doesn't tell the correct usage" is not right. The use of illustrative phrases and the thorough listing of distinct meanings are exemplary for a dictionary of this size.

I found this dictionary helpful in continuing my pursuit of the French Language, however, I would not recommend it for the beginning French reader, for it doesn't tell the correct usage.
