Bought this to use with my macbook to load pics from my DSLR's compact flash. Works fine, no drivers needed, but can't be full time in the slot because of size. I keep an SD card express card reader in the slot full time.

I got this reader after getting fed up with my new Lexar CF Expresscard reader. I unwrapped it, popped it in the computer, and my card came up instantly. Transfer speeds are blazing and Aperture itself is now the bottleneck, not the reader or card, but that's okay. The reader is pretty sturdy compared to Lexar's, but it is still possible to snap it where the white plastic meets the metal body. It shipped to me in a plain static bag so you have to come up with your own way to tote it around. I keep mine in a spare case for my sunglasses. The red LED is solid when the card is idle, blinks lightly when transferring, but stays lit even when you eject the card through the OS so its a little confusing that way. I'm pretty quick to eject and pull it and I've never gotten my hand slapped by Mac OS.

I just transferred 639 photos totalling 3.77 GB to the desktop and it took 1:57.1 to complete.

A CF card is 1 7/16" (36mm) tall. When inserted in the reader only 3/8" (9mm) goes in leaving the vast majority of the CF card hanging out. This could be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. I'm cool with it.

At the price point, this is a great product. The expresscard slot on my older 2008 Macbook Pro required no setup and was up and running as fast as I could insert the adapter. The best thing about the product was the lack of packaging. It came in one of the static shield bags most other computer components are enclosed within. No box, no paperwork, no instructions, no CD with drivers, nothing else was included and therefore, very little waste was generated.

The only downside to the product is that the white adapter interface that is not inserted into the expresscard slot is slightly cantilevered - it is not flush with the body of the laptop (hence the 4 stars). So, aesthetically it's not the most elegant design, but it does the job of freeing up a valuable USB port. I would advise against leaving it plugged into the laptop during transit for the same reason.

Use this on an older macbook pro. Works great, fast and easy. This makes it so easy to use the compact flash card. Wish it came with a case to protect it as I worry that it may get damaged with travel, but then I will just have to be careful. Product seems to be good quality. I feel that this is faster than using a USB reader. I miss my 2 card slots (PCMCIA I think) on my old Apple Wallstreet that allowed the reader to fit inside the computer. You have to be careful with the reader as it sticks out and you could damage it while using it in the computer.

So far I have had no issues with this card reader. Only sucky part is the design by apple where if you push it in to hard it springs back and ejects. So you either have to take the entire card reader out, put a new card in and reinsert or just be really carefull taking the cards in and out of the reader.

Since I recently switched from a PC to a macbook pro, I've been looking for accessories compatible with my camera gear. It took me a couple tries to find a compatible expresscard reader for SD cards and after trying this reader, I'm still looking for an expreesscard CF card reader. I have a 2011 macbook pro on 10.7.2 Lion. This expresscard was not recognized and the included 3.5" CD doesn't have drivers for the mac at all (I had to use a tray style cd drive since the small disc wouldn't work in the mac). I even downloaded a couple other drivers from different vendors, none of which worked. I contacted the Amazon vendor but they were useless and I ended up returning the reader. I emailed customer support for various CF reader manufacturers as well and was told that they don't support OS X 10.7. So for now I'm using an older SanDisk CF reader with a USB cable (still sold on Amazon) and it works fine even with a 32GB card.

I have an older MacBook Pro with a PCI34 slot and this works perfectly for me. (New MacBook pros don't have this slot.) Since my laptop also has one FW800 and one FW400, this expands my options. I can transfer from CF card in this slot directly to a hard drive connected to the FW800 slot for fastest possible data transfer, in my opinion. FW800 CF card reader is great, but then that port is used. Plus for $13.98 you can't go wrong. I made a little case to protect it when it's not in use since it comes with no case and I travel with it. Great deal and it's nice to put that PCI34 slot to good use.
